    Explore (Kinda) Great Park

by marinarena Written Feb 27, 2013

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Well, the Great Park is not quite living up to its lofty name just yet- however, discover it while in town and you may just be impressed about what's happening here. Still building up, the 1,300+ acre space, formerly the El Toro Marine Corps station, is an emerging O.C. destination for recreation and entertainment.

Currently, the Great Park is home one of the most popular destination to celebrate the New Year's holiday in the county and also the park houses a giant hot air ballon (the only spot to board one in O.C.), the monthly Antiques Market, a large farmer's market on Sunday and several outdoor concerts and performances.

Check out the plans on the website for this "great" space. There is literally lots and lots more to add here.

Go to Barclay for a Play (and more)

    Barclay Theater, Irvine, CA, USA
    1 more image

Barclay is the premiere theater of Irvine and perhaps of south Orange county. Acclaimed dance , jazz and theater performances take place here year-round. The interior is very attractive, more so than the typical sphere on the exterior. Barclay is in a prime location of Irvine, off the lovely university grounds, goregous floral hiking/bike trails, and the entertaining University Center

See website for updated events calendar and seating info.

Hang out at the University- the Center, that is!

    Irvine, CA

Nearby the campus of University of Irvine is the preferred meeting place of many locals- the University Center. It is a quiet and nicely built area fun with unique options for shopping, dining and movie watching.

What's best here is that there is less congestion, comparatively to the Spectrum center quite some miles away east.

For locals, permanent Irvine residents or those studying at the university, and also those staying for an extended time in this part of the city, the center is very convenient. There is a grocery store (Trader Joe's), a post office and Fed Ex retail store, other shops and for entertainment, there is the Edwards theater which particularly shows independent movies

Some of the best places to eat in Irvineare here at the center, including Veggie Grill( absolute godsend for vegetarians and vegans), Britta Cafe (the most classy restaurant option), Lee's Sandwiches (Viet-French-American is always a fave), a number of other Asian inspired eateries and others as well..

Want a deal here? There are frequent postings of coupons via the website. Check below!

Getting to University Center is easy. It is right across from the main UCI entrance, off University Dr. Take several OCTA buses, including routes 59, 79 and 178.

See a concert under the stars at Irvine Meadows...

by marinarena Updated Feb 27, 2013

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

...well, officially the main stadium of Irvine is no longer Irvine Meadows here since a long time. It has the unromantic corporate name of Verizon Wireless Amphitheater but I am one who is fond of charming, old things.

Major music acts perform at the stadium, the creme of the crop really from all genres. No one Orange county venue can compare to atrracting top performers. Check website for current lineups. Being an outdoor venue, be sure to pack a jacket or coat to prevent from freezing to death (I say this especially to you women who try to look cute without wearing sleeves of any kind.)

As far as venue rules, I hate that fact that I cannot use cameras, bring in outside food/snacks and even take a bottle water inside the place. I mean, it's an outdoor arena! Well, on the other hand, I'm not so bothered by these things, in that I break the rules sometimes. A girl can sneak quite a number of things in her bra and snug near the body :-)

My Irvine Meadows concert memories are seeing Phil Collins, Queensryche, Lenny Kravitz and Pink perform here. The biggest names perform Check out webpage for upcoming concerts.

This is a large outdoor mall with 130 retail stores located here. The design of the mall is based on the Alhambra fortress (Arabic: الحمراء‎) in Granada, Spain. I was very impressed with the huge arches, beautiful fountains, and lovely blooms located in the massive pots all around the shopping area. Lots of areas to rest and people watch:)

Archeological research establishes prehistoric man in the Irvine area at least 12,000 years ago, possibly even 18,000 years ago. Scattered evidence of early campsites and rock shelters can be seen in the undeveloped parts of the city where they establishing dozens of villages. This rock has the shape of the front of a turtle's carapace and is considered very sacred and was used for ceremonial purposes. It is located with the Turtle Rock neighboorhood.

Alhambra's Court of the Lions fountains is the most impressive, but they all are still very beautiful. Nothing better on a hot day to sit next to one and feel the cool breeze from the water spray. The sound of the water is also very pleasing. There were several feathered friends were enjoying them too. There are 9 of them to enjoy.

Some people do not like pets store, but at least these little creatures are in a safe place. Anything is better than running the streets and starving. Although on display and with everyone trying to pet them is not that bad. Personally while we were there, the cages were clean and the puppies all looked happy and healthy. They were all getting loved and yes, adopted. We enjoyed them. Lots of neat accessories for sale for all kinds of pets.

The Agricultural Headquarters Office Complex was first built in 1929. It nearly doubled in size in 1959 following several remodeling projects. The Irvine Company enlarged the office building in order to accommo- date a real estate and planning division, which was instrumental in developing the community of Irvine. It will soon serve as the headquar- ters of OC Parks.

The house was named after a former purchasing agent, Charles J. Cogan, who lived there. Today, this building contains offices for OC Parks and the Orange County Farm Bureau.

The Mess Hall, built in 1906, had a dining room and kitchen on the first floor. The second floor housed a dormitory for the ranch workers and their families. The Irvine Company enlarged the structure to its present size following a fire in 1967.
