John Wayne Airport is very close. It is small, but it has many flights from many locations. For interntational flights, of course LAX is the way to go.
If you have no car, you're pretty much screwed...The mass transportation is very limited, and cabs are expensive. Irvine is really flat, yet things are not in close walking distance...Who walks anyway?

    Take Advantage of I-Shuttles

by marinarena Written Feb 27, 2013

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Especially for those visiting here on business, the Irvine I-Shuttle buses are very efficient and serve as great companions of the main county buses (OCTA), especially when making train-bus travel.

The I-Shuttle bus stops are along the main streets of Irvine where likely riders would arrive, where business and tourism thrive. There are 4 main routes- A-D. The A & B routes focus on convenient travel from/to Tustin Metrolink Station, while the C & D routes focus on Irvine Metrolink/Amtrak Station.

Best thing about I-Shuttle? They are inexpensive-just $1 one-way and free if you have a Metrolink or OCTA pass. Also, every time I've boarded the I-Shuttle, it was a very smooth and easy ride. Buses are very clean also.

Shuttles run as early as 5:30 Am and go until as late as 8 PM.

Visit website to plan an I-Shuttle trip.

The 405 and 5 freeways both...

The 405 and 5 freeways both intersect in Irvine. By plane, you should fly into John F. Kenney AKA Santa Ana Airport, which is a 15 minute drive from Irvine.
My dad pointed out that Irvine is a city build for bicycling. Bike paths run through the whole city. Ironically, everyone drives cars.

Car is almost necessary here. Everything is so spread out in all of Southern California, that it's hard to get around by buses alone. There is a train that will take you to L.A. and other cities, but then again, you need to drive to the train station!

    Irvine Spectrum Center Parking Center

There is a wonderful parking structure to accomodate the visitors at the spectrum center. The structures have sensors that determine how many vehicles are inside at any given moment. As you enter the structure, a large digital display will tell you how many spots are left on a given level

They have stairways and elevators. I don't like elevators, but these had nice views to the outside and they were clean. Just be careful walking in the parking structure. Some very impatient drivers.

My husband and my oldest flew out of this beautiful airport to fly east to see Mom/Grandma. It was very easy to drop them off and pick them up.

John Wayne Airport can be accessed by the San Diego (I-405) Freeway, the Costa Mesa (SR-55) Freeway, and the Corona Del Mar Freeway/San Joaquin Hills Transportation Corridor Toll Road (SR-73).

Know "Y" U Need 2 Know About the El Toro "Y"

by marinarena Written Dec 27, 2005

There is much congestion in Irvine, especially during the morning when much of 9-5( ish) workforce come into this business central to start the day. Many cars merge at the ElToro "Y", where the 5 and 405 meet . Expect slow up dreadfully from about 6-8 AM and 4-6 PM , Monday through Friday!!

See website for the "Y" freeway map

    Arrive here via Amtrak/Metrolink

by marinarena Updated Jan 10, 2013
    Irvine Station, Irvine, CA
    2 more images

Irvine Station is a stop for both Amtrak and Metrolink train services, thus, making it very accessible. Though not one of the best looking stops (I like to visit particularly attractive, charming train stations :-), Irvine Station is a rather convenient stop, busy throughout the day and evening. If coming from Los Angeles, take the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner, Metrolink OC-Line (or IE-OC Line), or the Flyaway Bus (from Union Station-L.A.) down south.

Unlike some train station stops, Irvine has ample space for resting and has very good accomodations for weary travellers. Excellent amenities include plush seating, loaded vending machines (including a healthier food vending machine-not very common), several bike lockers, several waiting taxis (no need to call or flag one down), ample parking and visible 24-hr security (usually there is a guard in the lobby). Nearby, there is a "quik-stop" for table food options, at the Strawberry Cafe (the cookies are big and tasty!).
