Isla Vista Things to Do

I have spent much time up and down the California Coast, mainly between Orange Co and SF. There has to be something said for the sunsets in SB. Maybe because I basically lived on the ocean for those years, I was a witness to many fabulous spectacles of the sun fading over the horizon. While you are here, take the time out, and go to the beach, preferably one facing West, not South, and enjoy. (Sands / Devereaux – off the beaten path is a good one - or Lizards Mouth in the mountains)

Isla Vista Restaurants

  • Pizza, Salads, and College Kids

Woodstock Pizza is located near the college campus and is a popular hangout for the students. Good place to go for a pizza or a healthy salad, and watch the people. This appeared to be a place to go with friends and maybe hook up with a member of the opposite sex. I was here with my friend Brian, his fiancee and their kids (plus I was way older...

Recently I’ve heard bad things about this place. It is former World Record Holder to World’s Largest Burrito. I’ve also hear it is open 24/7 these days. So when you got the munchies at 3am, may be your only option. Super pollo burrito with Black Beans and a wheat tortilla. Yum…

If you know Woodstock’s, then you have lived or been through some of the smaller college towns on the west Coast. So Far I have found a Woodstock’s in SB, San Luis Obispo, Davis, Chico, Corvallis OR, and I think I heard about one up in Humboldt. (incase you don't know the correlation, these are all small to med size college towns)This one is locate...

Nightlife?!? As THE JOHNNY would say, “whatcha talk’n ‘bout Willis?” The whole place is one giant Keg party!! So here are some general rules to make your stay more enjoyable and out of the drunk tank (i.e. jail).

    If you are a random
    1) carry a cup
    2) carry the cup upside down when walking the streets
    3) a cup will make you look like a Freshman (assuming if you are the college age, if not, why are you doing this?)
    4) random friendly parties are centrally located at the 6600 block of DP and spread out from there.
    5) it is easier to carry your own liquor
    6) you will know if it is a “private party”
    7) if you are a girl, there are no such things as private parties
    8) don’t fall off the cliffs
    9) don’t *** in the streets
    10) no such thing as sidewalks, so don’t get hit by a car
    11) no, surfing at 2am is not a good idea while you’re p!ssed.
    12) Freebird’s Burritos is open 24 hours

Isla Vista Local Customs

  • Couch Burning

In IV (read the Off the beaten path – Isla Vista) there are a random ceremonial rituals that are usually “sparked” off by events like;1) the end of a school year 2) upset in the basketball game 3) a bunch of drunken guys sitting around with an idea that sounded good at the time. In the microcosm of IV, where there is a totally new gene pool every 4...

Someone from UCSB would understand the sentence:“My fellow old folk: Do you remember stumbling to DP past DLG, hoping to avoid a MIP or a BUI? Getting into IVBC with a FID (see? made that one up: Fake I.D.) and hopping to the DJ playing B.I.G? Man, that was the SHT. Now SAASB wants my FAN and GOLD says to pay my BARC. Gotta take the GRE 'cause...

Isla Vista Warnings and Dangers

  • Stew - Con't

Normally this might be a big deal, but in IV, there are plenty of rats around, and one more to the population was not something to worry about. Everyone just shrugged it off, and went about their week. Until one evening, a couple days later while some people were watching TV, the escapee felt lonely, and decided to join the group. He climbed on the...

WE HAD STEW"He's missing again!! There's a Stew alert" - was a common statement heard throughout The Trigo House. If you didn't catch it before, Stew was the house pet rat. This is a true story. What would you do if you were alone in your house, drinking a beer and while watching TV, you felt a little tug on your pant leg from a big rat looking up...

  • Bikes & B.U.I.'s

And just when you thought it could not get anymore ridiculous… it does. IV is home to some mad bicycle traffic. With limited parking and the majority of the students living within a mile or two of campus, EVERYONE rides their bikes to and from class. (for fun you can walk around campus and watch the bicycle accidents)You’ve heard of a DUI, correct?...

Isla Vista Off The Beaten Path

IV sits upon cliffs. South/East (if you are looking at the ocean, it is to your left) lays the Campus and then on the other side is Goleta Beach. Don’t go there… if you are in IV, go as far away as you can on DP (closest street to the ocean) away from Campus. Park. You will see a trail that runs along the cliffs, there will be many people on it. Keep on walking down the path until you come to a chain fence. Walk through the fence and you are at Sands / Deveraux Beach Point. There are other access points to the water…but keep on walking.
