The Cap Rock Nature Trail is a short, wheel-chair accessible trail showcasing plants native to this desert area. The trail is only .3 miles in length and has informative signs along the way. Nice views too.

Ryan Ranch Trail

The Ryan Family came here in 1896 to homestead a parcel of land here. A short 1/2 mile dirt trail leads to the adobe remains of the ranch house and the bunkhouse. If you wish, you can continue on the trail past the ranch house to the Ryan Campground.

Equipment: Good walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, weather appropriate clothing.

The Ryan Mountain Trail is a moderately strenuous 2.8 mile roundtrip trail to the summit of Ryan Mountain. The view is rewarding but be advised the trail is steep and there is no shade along the route. Do not attempt the trail unless you are free of medical issues and in good condition.

Equipment: Good walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, water, a snack, and don't forget your camera.

Oasis of Mara Trail

Oasis of Mara Trail

The Oasis of Mara Trail is an easy, paved .5 mile trail leading to the oasis. The water that allowed the oasis to form is gone now and has to be piped in. It is interesting to see the plants that grow here compared to more arid portions of the desert, and the wildlife that live here too.

Equipment: Good walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, water, and don't forget your camera.

Twin Tanks Trail

Twin Tanks is named for a pair of nearby natural rock formations that were used to trap and store water. This is a popular access point for the 35 mile long California Riding and Hiking Trail. Make sure you obtain a backcountry permit for this hike along with appropriate maps and guides.

The Cholla Cactus Garden Trail is a short (.25 mile) easy trail through a grove of Cholla (Choy-ya) Cactus. This is probably my favorite of the short easy trails in the park.

Equipment: Good walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, water, and don't forget your camera.

The Arch Rock Trail is a short (.3 mile) trail that acquaints you with the geological forces at work in the park. There are several informative and interesting signs along the trail. Here you will also see the Arch Rock and a good example of a Sculpted Rock. The trail is a little steep in places and the footing is unsure. The trailhead is in the White Tank Camping Area.

The Cottonwood Spring Trailhead is near the southern entrance to the park and is a short dirt trail. It is steep in places and is not wheelchair accessible. Cottonwood Springs was another vital source of water in this part of the desert for many years.

The trail to Lost Palms Oasis is a 7.6 mile roundtrip along a strenuous trail. The oasis is an important habitat for Bighorn Sheep so overnight camping is not permitted here.
