by cobrioc A day hike from the Cottonwood Visitor Center- the lone southern entry point into the park, about 25 miles east of Indio, will guide you to the breathtaking Lost Palm Oasis, a lush spring fed garden of water grasses and dozens of stately California desert fan palms. The grove, with its 70-foot trees, sits several hundred feet down at the bottom of an impressive sandstone gorge that evokes images of Old Testament geography. In this sylvan setting, taking in the shade and cool spring water, you feel as though you're breathing rare air.

Ocotillo by PinkFloydActuary This is simply a pullout along the scenic drive, south of the Cholla Garden trail. There's a plaque where you can read about the Ocotillo, a strange, spindly plant that survives by shedding its leaves in times of drought, but will grow large leaves and beautiful red flowers within days of getting some rain. All you can really do here is pull off for a moment and get a picture, but if you have any interest in the plant life in the desert, it's worth the couple of minutes to do this. Leave a Comment
