An excellent hike can be easily had without too strenuous an effort to the Fortynine Palm Oasis.

The hike to the oasis and back is a total of 3 miles with a climb from 2720’ to a peak of 3080’ then down to the oasis at 2800’. What you will find is an amazing palm oasis that contains over 50 towering palm trees, running water with shallow pools and animals in abundance.

This Oasis, one of several in the park is in the southeast corner of the park just a short drive from the Cottonwood visitor's center.

There is such a lot to see in this place and it pays to be prepared for the unexpected.

In certain lights the park assumes quite a magical. mystical atmosphere.

A very special place to remember and hopefully return to,

Here you will find a variety of trails including a short, easy, 1 mile Nature Trail. The Nature Trail passes through the rolling hills of the Colorado Desert and has signs along the trail to tell you about the plants, animals, and the history of the Cahuilla Indians who use to live in the area. The Cottonwood Oasis Springs is a major water source in the park, sometimes producing as much as 30 gallons of water an hour. There is a wonderful collection of Fan Palms and cottonwoods around the springs. Pick up the park handout titled “A Day at Cottonwood Spring” to learn more about the area. It will provide a map for you to follow which will give you a variety of trails to choose from besides the Nature Trail and the Oasis.

Lost Palms Oasis is lost at the end of a four mile trail through magnificent desert landscapes. When you arrive at the Lost Palms Canyon teeming with bright green fan palms, you'll understand...

Near the south end of the park, you can drive to the Cottonwood Springs, home of a palm-tree oasis and a grove of cottonwood trees. The area is known for attracting various birds, but I didn't see any in my short time there. If you're interested in taking the 1 mile lround trip trail, park at the Cottonwood campground, the trail starts near sites 13A&B. If you park at the oasis yourself, you may have difficulty finding where the short trail begins (I never did find it.) It is an amazing sight to have the lush green trees after driving through the stark desert.
