Last time I ate at this restaurant it was called Margaritas. Since then it has changed hands and is now called, The Fajita Grill. I haven't eaten here since, but have heard that the food and service is much better now. The portions are big and though the prices are higher than the usual Taco Shop, the ingredients are really fresh.
The inside dining room is a bit plain, but the patio is really nice to have lunch on when the weather permits. One thing that is pretty different, is that the outdoor patio dining section allows dogs too.
Favorite Dish: They only serve beer and wine. They do make cocktails from wine, like wine Margaritas, but that wouldn't appeal to me. They have fresh fish tacos, but it's the Fajitas I like. They seem to mix it up in the pie department, instead of the iconic Apple pie, they have been known to offer an interesting concoction of peaches, pears, raspberries and lots of Bourbon, they call it the "Drunken Pie." I'd stop in just for that.
Julian is noted for it's apples and it seems that the whole town works hard to promote this product.
Apples grow best in the cooler climates back East or up North, but in this part of sunny, southern California, the mountains do get pretty cold, snow and everything during the winter. So, the apple trees grow and they are delicious.
There are so many pie shops in Julian that you have to go up there many times to try them all. Not only the pie shops, but many of the restaurants offer Apple Pie on their dessert menu as well.
Here I'm listing three of my favorites:
Julian Pie Company
(760) 765-2449 or (760) 765-2400
2225 Main Street
Pies, soups, sandwiches.
2119 Main Street
Julian Café (& Bakery)
Julian apple pie, family dining. Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
2112 Main Street, Julian, CA 92036
Favorite Dish: "As American as Apple Pie"
These pie shops do offer drinks/limited meals but it is the Apple Pie that I'm suggesting here. This is one of the most popular items offered in every dining establishment in Julian and it is especially good warmed and serve with ice cream!
Most of the pie shops offer other types of pies and bakery goods but I only get the Apple Pie.
This cafe is renowned in Julian - and much further afield! There are others serving Julian apple pies ( lots of other fruits too if you prefer) but we were happy to rerurn - recalling our first vist on a very wet and cold day some years before.
Had it not been for a sudden stiff breeze we would have sat outside. It was busy but we found a cosy corner where we enjoyed a very good American style sandwich ( not TOO big) followed by our choice of pie with steaming hot coffee to follow.
They have a variety of food that belies their name of Wynola Pizza Express. I love their salads, awesome soups, and gourmet pizzas. This restaurant should be a destination. I just had a coconut, chicken, and fresh vegetable soup yesterday that the best restaurants in San Diego would envy.
The drive up the mountain is very relaxing. They have lots of parking. It is definitely a back country restaurant but oh so enjoyable. Bands play live music on Fri, Sat. and Sunday nights.
Wine and beer for those inclined.
Favorite Dish: I love their Chow Mein dish and salads best. Cowboy Pizza is my favorite Pizza. They have a custom soda drink station that is surprisingly good.
Located within the former Fire House for Julian, the Candied Apple Pastry Company with the slogan "Impeccable to the Core" has that quick pick me up pastry or a blast from the past, a genuine red candied apple or many other types of candied and caramel apples, brownies, fudge, cookies and assorted other goodies to tease your tummy.
Chef Charles Scott has many decorative cakes as well as pastries he and Chef Crystal create for your pleasure. The pastries vary and are the melt in your mouth delites. Perhaps to enjoy with a cup of espresso or latte. Candied Apple Pastry Company is open from 9am till 5pm every day except Tuesday.
Favorite Dish: Okay, I really, really like the red candied apple but stop and sit down with a pastry and a latte for a morning treat.
You look up the street in Julian, a small rural mountain town, and see yesterday. From the old fashioned Town Hall, the hotel in the center of town to that soda shop on the corner. Standing on the corner watching all the girls go by. Time to get back to today and go inside Miner's Diner. Yep, one miner who owned the diner, not named for gold miners. lol
This is the real deal soda jerk fountain location with sarsaparilla from the tap. You have gone back in time once inside with all the different memory signs and fixtures that take you back to the 1920's. Even the sodas and food are geared for the past with the only drawback being the prices are now. A little expensive for the food items and sodas but again it is dining as if it were the yesteryears. Next door in the same building through a doorway is a drugstore, but I don't believe they have drugs. lol A bit of fun to walk through. Miner's Diner is open from 8am till 5 pm.
Favorite Dish: A real old fashioned soda fountain poured coca cola to drink, along with a buffalo burger (the best) and french fries. Somehow, it makes you want to cry. Americana at it's best.
I've eaten here twice and both times it was delicious. The menu has steak and seafood with soups and salads and specials. They are supposedly famous for their Peach Chicken dinner, although I didn't know that and so I didn't order it. I had the Chicken with artichokes and it was yummy! We were a bit packed in in the patio alcove. Try the peach vodka martini, it's yummy! (Just be sure they put sugar on the rim!)
This cute cafe serves continental breakfast, salads, sandwiches and daily specials. It was a windy cool day when we were there and we had the chili with sour cream, chopped red onions and shredded cheese.
It came with a fresh roll. It was a perfect way to warm up for a while. We topped it off with apple pie `a la mode and coffee with refills.
This is a good place for a quick meal.
Favorite Dish: We only tried the chili but it was very good and there was plenty. It came with nice sides. I guess the apple pie was the main attraction. It was delicious.
Wynola Pizza Express - Woodfired gourmet pizza made from scratch.
The kitchen area and pizza oven was designed by famed local artist and architect James Hubbell, it's truly a piece of art.
Favorite Dish: The triple cheese pizza (with pine nuts) is my personal favorite.
The Julian Grille -- The finest restaurant in Julian... excellent food selections from sandwiches to prime rib... Highly recommended!
This restaurant was once a private home and the atmosphere is peaceful, intimate and romantic. Outside dining is available as well. Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends.
Favorite Dish: Georgia Peach Chicken -- Chicken breast encrusted with pecans and sweet peach sauce... yum yum!
