Kernville Restaurants

  • Old Town Charm

This one of those wonderful little restaurants that has stayed in business for many years due to the good food and the home town charm. Yet there seems to be some disparity with how the owner may reacted to their customers. I hope it is not so.This sign on the front says Bldg Est. 1920, which makes it very historical at least. Please see Trip...

  • Great view, terrible food

The view from the restaurant is beautiful, but the food was awful. My "garlic mashed potatoes" were made from a powdered mix and the lettuce in the salad was spoiled. I would suggest eating at "That's Italian" instead. A waste of $40!

  • Ewings on the Kern

There's a panoramic window with fantastic views of the Kern River as well as raccoons that run along the walkway outside the window. The raccons are well trained to beg for food as they stand up on their rear legs, pressing their faces against the glass, looking in while you're eating.Restaurant has a rustic Country & Western motifs. Prime Rib.

Our rafting guides Kathy and Jeff, explaining the proper way to put on a lfe vest as well as what to do if you fall into the river.

If you fall in, try to roll into the river, keeping your arms tucked in and float down the river on you back, legs facing forward

Don't try to stand in the river because your leg(s) might get stuck in the rocks and the water current might pull you under.

This is a trap of a different kind. This picture shows the bottom of the raft I used which frequently got stuck on the rocks in the river.

Well one of the bottom seams on the floor came apart, causing the floor to be lower than normal, which would explain why this raft was trapped on the rocks more often than other rafts.

Kernville What to Pack

  • Packing List

It's a good idea to wear a bathing suit or T-shirt underneath your wetsuit. That way, if it gets too hot in your wetsuit, you can peel down the top half without violating any indecency laws.

  • Packing List

The water in the Kern River is cold so it's a good idea to wear a wet suit like Caroline is wearing. And for safety, one should wear a helmet and a floatation (life) jacket in case you fall into the river. Also note that Caroline is wearing river shorts over her wetsuit. It may look funny but it's purpose if to help prevent you from slipping off...
