    No Inferiority Complex Here!

Let me introduce you to Alexander of the Marine Room restaurant. He was prompt, friendly, helpful and gracious. Ask for him when you go to the Marine Room in La Jolla.

This tip is not about "tipping" nor is it about restaurants. It is about the classy service one gets in a classy place.

Many times that I've guided people into swank places, they hold back a bit or comment that they don't want to go into a place where the service people are rude and condescending. Guess that's the way it is in many parts of the country, those who are rude and condescending have an inferiority complex and must behave in a snobby way to make themselves feel more important.

Not so in La Jolla! La Jolla is a place where the majority of the service people are gracious and really a "Class Act." This is one of the reasons everyone suggests La Jolla as a Must See In San Diego.

La Jolla is a world class resort area and most of the people working there, that you might come upon, will be gracious, friendly, helpful and welcoming.

It's true that in most of the shops, hotels and restaurants you aren't premitted to enter while wearing beach clothes, and most of us would like to dress our best, but the cost of the clothes a customer wears isn't considered when the service is given.

    Other animals and birds

A little north of the Children's Pool, there was a rocky area that seemed to be home to quite a few pelicans, I believe they are California Brown Pelicans. Despite their size, they are quite graceful when they fly and if you watch long enough, you may spot one of them diving into the water to find some dinner. Up near the caves I also saw a rock wall filled with comorants, a black coastal bird, and many of them flying along the coast.

Along the path I saw some squirrels, I believe these are California Ground Squirrels. I was surprised to see them as I had never seen squirrels before in California, I assumed they were all located in colder areas. They are different from the squirrels we see in the midwestern part of the country, their tails are not as bushy, but they both look like rodents which is the family they belong to. I saw a couple of babies near the coastline in La Jolla, the squirrels are used to being fed by people so they aren't very timid and you can get pretty close to them before they scamper off.

Most, if not all, of the animals at the Children's Pool seemed to be harbor seals but we did think we saw a few California sea lions a bit north of the Children's Pool, frolicking in the water and laying on the rocks. Sea lions are larger, with longer flippers and can support themselves on their two front flippers, the seals do not use their flippers to support their bodies and slide along the beach instead of walk.

I know it looks like you should be pronouncing this like La Jawla but you'll be less conspicuous if you pronounce it correctly and say La Hoya. La Jolla is Spanish for "the jewel", and indeed La Jolla is a jewel along the Pacific Ocean.
