When we drove to visit a friend who's home is at the Top of the World, we struggled against a severe fog that enveloped the windy canyon roads. If you face this problem, drive very carefully and slow...
I remember this used to happen when I was living there. Looks like it still does.
With all the steep hills and canyons, all it takes is a little sustained rainy season combined with some wildfires, and you get significant mudslides.
June 1, 2005 Bluebird Canyon about 15 blocks from the beach in the Flamingo road area of Laguna Beach, about (so far) 6-12 $2-million dollar houses slid down the hill.
110 other homes have been evacuated and many will be "red-tagged" as uninhabitable. Luckily so far no one has been hurt.
Just part of living in Laguna. A link to the story and a photo slide-show is below.
The cliffs from beach up to Heisler Park are steeper than they look.
I am telling you because I know.
One early evening after a long, relaxing sunset dinner and some drinks at the Beach House
I decided to walk out in the surf to the rocks, sit and watch the last of the sunset.
My timing was bad, as the tide came in fast and trapped me in the cove (d'oh!!) where the only options were: swim out in my clothes; or climb the cliff trail up to the park.
There was a steep path up the cliff that looked walkable, but when you get on it you find it is a slippery & almost vertical climb.
I made it, and I wish you could have seen the looks on the faces of the tourists as "quasimodo" the lightly toasted mudman emerged at the top and climbed up over the Heisler Park railing.
Actually people do get too close and fall sometimes, so be careful, especially outside the railings along the edge of the park cliffs going north.
The rock I got trapped on is in the right background of the picture.
Warning: optical illusion.
Here is the "trail" from the top.
This is where I climbed from the cove I was trapped in...
Shot from a Heisler Park railing looking down the actual path I climbed:........
An optical illusion: looks like nothing in this digital shot.......WRONG.... this is actually a 30-50ft drop from Heisler Park to the beach.
