We hiked part of this trail to the Echo Lakes, it was a moderate hike with some hills, some steep. Some open views and the views of true small mountain lakes, with their clear water and undisturbed environment.

Snow at Lassen National Forest - 1942

Even though there was no snow at the Potato Patch sign, there was plenty further up on the trails. My parents visit to Lassen over 63 years ago was my incentive to visit this area in 2000. I was not disappointed.

Lassen Natinal Forest - Potato Patch

This is a picture of my father at Lassen in 1942, after he was drafted and sent to Chico Army Air Base in Chico, California.
During one of his free days he and my mother took a trip to Lassen National Forest.

In 1942 Lassen was not a National Park. In fact it was still recovering from the eruption of the Volcano about 28 years earlier. It would be much like visiting Mt. St. Helen today after the 1980 eruption.

    Nobels' Emigrant Trail

In the 1850's and 1860's, before the volcanic eruption, thousands of emigrants passed through this area on their way to Northern California.

If you look around at all the downed trees in the forest it makes you wonder at how slow the going was for William Noble.

Mt. Shasta is another great mountain that is only 75 miles away from Mt. Lassen. It makes for a beautiful backdrop when driving north from Lassen towards Oregon.
