    Monitor Pass

    by SteveOSF Updated Oct 16, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    If Highway 120 over Tioga Pass to Yosemite is still closed due to snow, you may be able to take Highway 89 over Monitor Pass as we did. This road is not too well traveled compared to Highways 50 and 80. It is a winding highway, with steep cliffs, and deep drop offs just beyond the shoulder of the roadway. Guardrails are far from abundant, but as you climb over the 8,314 foot pass, the views are fantastic. Unfortunately, haze was in the air the day we traversed the pass. Once you pass the summit, you drop down quickly until you intersect Highway 50 south of Lake Tahoe.

    Tioga Pass

    Near Lee Vining Highway 120 intersects Highway 395. You can take Highway 120 right into Yosemite National Park. Note that Highway 120 is opened seasonally and will close in the winter. On our visit at the end of April, it was not opened yet. The Rangers the Mono Basin Visitor Center will have information about road conditions in the area.

    Reliable Car

    A rented car at Mono Lake

    Lee Vining is a relatively remote community located east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California. As a small isolated town, there is no public transportation. You will need a vehicle to get to Lee Vining, as well as to see the sights around Mono Lake. This is not the type of country where you would want to break down, so be sure you vehicle is reliable. If you have an older car, you might consider renting one before venturing to Lee Vining.

    Eastern Portal to Yosemite National Park

    Lee Vining Canyon

    I would definitely suggest going to Lee Vining at some point so you can see the eastern side of Yosemite National Park. As you can see the mountainsides of Lee Vining Canyon along Highway 120 are prone to rock slides. The road "over yonder" is chewed up my all those rock slides.

    RV= Recreation Vehicle :)

    by dutch_anna Updated Jul 25, 2003
    RV on view point near Lee Vining.

    We traveled through California with a rented RV, and later with a rented car. The roads are good (not the one to Bodie, though:( See my Must See Activity tip: "the ghost town Bodie")
    The RV was rented from Moturis, the car from Dollar.

    Before going over the Tioga-pass ...

    by Pavlik_NL Written Oct 17, 2002

    Before going over the Tioga Pass (or just after) the Mono Lake is immediately accessable by car. The Tioga Pass itself is also a wonderfull journey up and through the Sierra Nevada-mountains. Highest point is just over (or was it under) 3.000 meters. Even in summertime, places with snow can be found in the shadows and a few quiet mirroring lakes are reflecting the tops.
