    Leo Carrillo State Park

The waters around Leo Carrillo are quite clear, making it one of the best scuba diving and snorkeling areas in southern California. Be sure to dive with a friend, never alone, and only in areas where lifeguards are present. Ask park personnel about the best locations for diving.

If you enjoy fishing, many people fish from the beach and rocks. Such fish as kelp bass, surf perch, sheephead, halibut, thresher shark, corbina, and white sea bass may be caught. Be aware that if you are fishing from the rocks, the rocks are slippery. Also watch the tide as it comes in, so that you are not stranded on the rocks. Any fisherman over 16 years of age must have a California fishing license.

    Kite Surfing in Leo Carrillo

Surfing and kite surfing, also know as fly surfing and kite boarding are very popular sports in Leo Carrillo. Sequite Point and the nearby Staircase and County Line beaches are especially popular, North Beach is also popular with kite surfers. If you are not familiar with kite surfing, this is sport where a person stands on a board wearing a harness connected to a large power kite. The rider controls the kite, so that it pulls the person across the water. As you become more expert at the sport you may learn to become air born for a short time, twirling in the air before landing. This is a challenging sport, with the kite having to be piloted in the sky, while the board must be steered with the feet. It is just amazing how fast these folks go sometimes. If you would like to learn more about this sport visit http://www.nearfield.com/~dan/sports/kitesurf/index.htm. There are some great action photos of kite surfers on this site.

Equipment: For kite surfing you will need the correct type of board, a harness, power kite, and proper kite strings. Depending on the style of kite you purchase, you may also need a pump to blow air into the air chambers of the kite. Everyone we saw up and down the coast, also wore wet suits

If you want a little more speed with your surfing try parasailing. You use a parasail to grab the wind and pull you along on a board. It is definitely an acquired skill but is loads of fun.
