    Long Beach--a great
    alternative to LAX!
    by VdV
Long Beach airport (LGB) is a terrific alternative to LAX for getting to/out of southern California. Much less crowded, and far less hassles than when flying out of LAX.

It has a small, wonderful Art Deco-style terminal, with about 8 gates. It's so small that sometimes your bags are at the baggage claim area before you get there!

American, America West and JetBlue all fly out of Long Beach airport.
My personal favorite is JetBlue, which has direct non-stop flights to Washington-Dulles, New York-JFK, Boston-Logan, Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta, and Oakland.

The only drawback is that you have to board the planes via steps, rather than through the traditional walk-on gates, so be prepared to lug your carry-on up a flight of steps to board.

Jet Blue offers twice daily service from JFK. I am a 100,000 mile per year flyer and was really impressed by the price ($480.00 round trip on 3 day notice), quality of aircraft (new Airbus 340), and the friendly staff. One warning though. Every flight is full and they do not serve meals. Bring a sandwich, a lot of people do. 5 1/2 hours is a long time in a plane.

If the boat ride to Catalina seems too long and you have some money to burn, another option is taking a helicopter. The helicopter appeared to leave from the same general area as the Queen Mary.

Island Express Helicopter Service is the name of the company, the ride takes about 15 minutes.

I still can't believe a one way ticket on the Aqualink only costs $1! What a deal for tourists! the same route by traditional taxi would easily cost $12. The Aqualink has one circular route which runs from Alamitos Bay(where all 3 restaraunts I reviewed are) to Rainbow Harbor and then the Catalina Island Terminal. Passengers can board or exit ant any of the three stops.

Several years ago we took the ferry over to Catalina Island for the day and it was a lovely day trip. Ferries to Catalina Island can be picked up in Long Beach, the trip takes an hour or so

Catalina Express is docked near the Queen Mary

Catalina Explorer looks like it docks near the aquarium

If you want to take a tour of the bay or go out fishing, you can rent a boat by the half day or day. In the wintertime they have plastic around them so you won't get so cold while touring the bay at night.
