One of my fondest memories is the VT LA Meeting 19 April, 2002. It was the first time I went to a VT Meeting and met others from cyberspace.
Once in a while the Staff at VT organizes a VT Meeting in Manhattan Beach. I went to the first one and had a wonderful time.
Here, on the back of the postcard we sent to VT Ffriend, brdwtchr, are the signatures of all attending, a souvenir of our wonderful, 'real' meeting.
Hugo Ballin was a muralist, film producer, and author Hugo Ballin (1879-1956). He is the muralist for the central rotunda ceiling mural at the Griffith Observatory that he painted in 1934-35. The Hugo Ballin ceiling mural depicts the celestial mythology with the four winds, the signs of the zodiac, and the planets as gods. Griffith Observatory considers the ceiling mural as one of their greatest artistic treasures.
Hugo Ballin was born in New York on March 7, 1879 and studied art in his youth. One of his early mural projects was doing 26 murals for the Wisconsin State Capital. After working for the Goldwyn Pictures,New Jersey, in the early 1900's as a production designeer and art director, he moved to Los Angeles and worked for the studios and wrote, directed, and produced silent films for his own company. He was married to the actress Mabel Croft Ballin.
After talking pictures took hold, he returned to his murals and became a world known muralist in Los Angeles. Some of his works still stand at landmark locations around Los Angeles such as the central rotunda of the Griffith Observatory. He died on November 27, 1956, and was buried in Santa Monica at the Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery. His wife, Mabel, died two years later and is buried beside Hugo Ballin. Many of Los Angeles and Hollywood's famous are buried at Woodlawn as well.
