Frank Gehry Does It To Me...Again!
Favorite thing: If you enjoy tracking down "trophy architecture" like Carol and I, then sooner or later you either get your socks knocked off or end up saying "What were they thinking?". The former Chiat/Day building designed by Frank Gehry certainly had me scratching my head in bewilderment.
The strange assemblage of building styles, combined with the four story tall black binoculars which you walk under the enter the building, made me curious to learn more about the project. What I discovered seemed pretty interesting me...although unless you are interested in architectural minutia, my ramblings might bore you as much as another Gehry stainless steel ribbon...apologies to all of Frank's fans.
In any event, if you can put up my some of my "blog-like" writing, check out my "More Frank Gehry I Love to Hate" travelogue.
As a side note, when I tried to take a picture from under the giant binocular, a security guard raced out informed us that picture taking was not allowed from within the building property at the request of the architect. We could, of course, go across the street...

Santa Monica Beach
Favorite thing: It’s easy to see why Santa Monica is considered the first choice for a Southern California beach vacation. This seaside city blends the charm and appeal of a coastal getaway with an unforgettable beach and the sophistication of an urban center—a magnetic combination.
Santa Monica's stunning beach is the city’s greatest natural asset. Blessed with 3.5 miles of broad sandy coastline and more than 340 days of sunshine per year, Santa Monica serves as the perfect backdrop for the sun-kissed, fit California beach lifestyle
Fondest memory: With manned lifeguard stations, casual eateries, equipment rental spots, public fitness and activity facilities, a fabulous bike trail, wooden pathways for beachgoers with disabilities and warm days (daytime temperatures average mid-60s to low 70s F in winter and 80s F in the summer), it's not hard to see why Santa Monica State Beach is a favorite destination for people of all ages.

Visit Santa Monica. That place...
Favorite thing: Visit Santa Monica. That place is really beatifull. We first went there in a gap between our morning arrival from Brazil and our evening departure to Australia, and it was just so great that we decided that in our way back to Brazil, we would stay a few days more than previously planned. Don't miss the pier, the 3th street promenade and the promenade by the sand.

Favorite thing: see the ocean! The beach was probably my favourite part of LA - I ended up staying in Venice, and walked down to Santa Monica. Santa Monica is a pretty pleasant place, and some nice shopping. There's a Hostelling International affiliated hostel here which would be a good place to stay - but you'll need to book ahead - it was full when I went! Details on the official HI webpage here.
Head for the shore. If you are...
Favorite thing: Head for the shore. If you are in the city for one day do not make the mistake of spending it in the downtown area. The action for the shot stopover tourist is on the westside, meaning Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Venice, etc.. There is a lot to see all over LA, but if time is short, that's where you go.
I'd take someone blazing down...
Favorite thing: I'd take someone blazing down a mountain trail, careening over rocks, sand and trees (with an occasional rattelsnake). Finish off with a sunset at the beach in Malibu. Forget Hollywood. It's all glitter and trash. A sad place really. In fact, most movie production activity has moved to the West Side. Check out the 3rd Street promonade in Santa Monica, Main Street and other sites on the West Side. Lots of fine dining opportunities and infinitely more comely.
Fondest memory: I live in L.A., so I miss the weather, what else!? Also, a multitude of things to do in a relaxed setting.
wander round Santa Monica. I...
Favorite thing: wander round Santa Monica. I did not see a lot of it as it was dark but it seemed like a very vibrant and fun place to be in and there are some great restaurants there.
Fondest memory: Meeting one of my friends and visiting a major corporations main sites. It was one of the best experiences in my life so far!
Western End of Historic Route 66
Fondest memory: Santa Monica marks the western end of the historic Route 66. This photo of the Will Rogers plaque was taken at the intersection of Santa Monica Blvd. and Ocean Ave. The historic Route 66 or U.S. Highway 66 runs from Chicago, IL, to Santa Monica, CA, a distance of 2,448 miles (3,940 km). The states it passes through are Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.

Fondest memory: So... I mess up our plan. We didn't have time for rest nor shower, just put down our luggage, had a pee, then rushed down to Santan Monica. I was pressured, so as my brother who have to drive all the way from San Diego this morning... Both were tired! We were very late, Yubert and Fatimah were calling and afaraid we got lost. By the way we arrived the restaurant in Santa Monica it was 1.5 hours late. And so sorry that all of them were waiting for us before ordering food... But then we had a great dinner, that's for the LA crews.
