What to Wear - Packing, Los Angeles
I am obliged to a gal who cuts hair on the other side of town. She is "rad". However, when she was outta town, I got my mop cropped at "Rudy's", a cool spot in Los Feliz.
Rudy's is a stylin' space - a re-worked auto shop that sells magazines and CDs while you wait. Cuts cost, I think $18, which is cheap for Los Angeles. Ask for "Dale". She knew what she was doing and was an absolute peach.
Worth a look if you need a haircut while in the City of Angels.
It is a big surprise for most European tourists, that the people in the States are ratherly prudish. Dropping your bikini top on the beach is not allowed by law and maybe you will be fined. Punishment means in certain cases not only a stiff fine but a court appearance as well.
Yet, you can find topless beach in almost every county along the California coast. There are at least 50 places where topless sunbathing is tolerated, but in Los Angeles and Orange county unfortunately not.
The best accessory in Los Angeles, hands down, is a killer bod.
Want to get into the hottest club? Be tight and toned. Sure, you can be wearing plastic payless shoes and copious fringe, but so long as you're showing some aerobicized skin, you're golden.
And, yes, it's pathetic and shallow.
For all the glam images of LA telescoped around the world, it's pretty tacky in reality. The lines of trash outside of the "hottest" clubs will make you double-take.
Walking up Cahuenga one night, my old NYC friend stared in disbelief at the hoochie crowds line up outside the bars: "Oh my God, this looks like something I'd see growing up in Louisiana..."
But, if you got the body, you too can get in.
In the summer, a nice pair of leather flip-flops with your jeans will blend you in nicely. Make sure your jeans are long enough to drag the ground a little at your heal. Don't wear "Wrangler" jeans, they may still be illegal. Cargo shorts will also work with your t-shirt, which shouldn't mention anything associated with Los Angeles except for Universities. If you want to wear something to tell people what your favorite movie or TV show is, get a fleece or windbreaker. They look like crew jackets and people will think you work on the show.
Suits are pretty uncommon for business meetings, but you can always ask someone's assistant what people wear to their office. I've been in a studio meeting where the most important guy was wearing pajama bottoms and no shirt. (No, it wasn't in Chatsworth.) If you're headed to an evening function, like a business dinner or opening, and will wear a suit, wear a colored shirt that matches your tie. If you wear a white shirt, people will assume you're the venue manager.
Certain things you wear will surely make you stand out as a tourist. These would include tight spandex swim shorts for men (Speedo's), multiple cameras strapped around your neck, tight shorts on men, and Hard Rock Cafe T-shirts.
It seems like all people ever wear in this town is their favorite pair of jeans. Granted the jeans may be overpriced couture, but the nice thing about California Casual style is that you can dress up a pair of jeans and pretty much go almost anywhere. It is certainly a more comfortable way of dressing!
Los Angeles has the influence of the Pacific Ocean and the mountains which makes the weather moderate. The temperature in winter is between about 45-66F (7-18C) and in the summer between 63-76F (16-24C). There is a rainy season November-March. In summer LA's smog can affect those with respiratory problems.
If you are in Hollywood, dress in black from head to toe. If you are in the South Bay, Surfing or Volleyball shorts help you blend in.
