Looking for a local joint to have a dance and drink on a Thursday night or the weekend, the Mai Tai bar is the perfect place to go. Located in Long Beach, Mai Tai bar is a low-key club/bar which many locals hang out at. I was there on a Thursday night and the place was packed. The DJ was spinning hip/hop and there was a good crowd. Get ready to wait at the bar though to get your drinks. It took me a good 15 minutes to order and the bartender still managed to get my order wrong.

A good place to find out who (music or film) is playing where for the upcoming weekend/week is the weekly paper, L.A. Weekly. This publication, supported by ad revenues, comes out on Thursdays at various popular traffic areas. There is an online source at www.laweekly.com. At the site click on Calendar, and there will be various categories of clubs and their lineups.
Other than the weekly calendar, they offer some one-sided commentary on politics, local dealings in LA, and pop culture.
There are so many things to do in Los Angeles that my best recommendation is to look at some websites: www.digitalcity.com and www.ticketmaster.com
I love the beach areas the best, especially Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, and Santa Monica.
