Here is a website that lists all the nightclubs that are good and gives their contact info:

No sneakers or hats; men wear collared shirts for most places
This is the place to see and to be seen. One of the hottest spot is town for celebs (right on Sunset Strip). At the same time.. the ambiance is an intimate, low-key outdoor venue. Under the stars and near the pool, not to metion a breathtaking view of LA.
longues ...(which look like large mattresses.. are arranged near the pool below... (very cool idea) where guests can recline under trees decorated with lighted candles. Very sexy.
The problem, howeve, could be getting in. Most walk-ins have little luck getting past the doorman. One sure route is to stay at the Mondrian hotel as a guest - a hotel room key immediately gains you entrance to the Sky Bar. Otherwise, you might want to try to calling for reservations for dinner (served until 9 p.m.) to get on the guest list. The peak social scene is around 1 a.m. And the Sky Bar isn't cheap - drinks are a flat $18 each (age 21 & over only).
Dress Code:
Trendy and hip... just dress as sexy and beautiful as you can.
SkyBar is like the motherland for LA's wannabe it crowd. The famous, near famous, and beautiful all hang out there. It's definitely a scene, and it can be a lot of fun with a large group of friends.
But unless you want to wait in that god-forsaken line for hours, I recommend entering SkyBar through the Mondrian (the hotel next door). Get to the hotel early, around 9PM, and walk through the lobby and out the back. You'll basically end up in SkyBar's patio.
Good luck, and enjoy those $11 drinks!
Dress Code:
Semi-casual, to nice.
Hot spots in LA change like the wind. The hottest spot has a lifespan of about 3-6 months or so. After that the only people you will see at spots like Sky Bar will be other tourists like you.
Update: The info below is like, totally outdated, but if you let me know I'll tell you what's going on! Right now the Standard downtown, is good but that's about all I know. White Lotus, The Smell. Dude, all I do is surf and hang westside these days.
Historical Archive: Currently hot spots include Las Palmas and 'W'. Expect huge crowds and unless you are an extremely beautiful woman or know someone....please step behind the velvet rope!
Although I do not live in LA, I have had a chance to visit and sample some hot night clubs & bars in the region. Here's a list of my recommendations:
Ivar, Skybar, Miagi's, the Lounge, Beverly Hills Social Club, Sharkee's, Garden Of Eden
Dress Code:
LA is pretty laid back- as long as you look good and keep on the cutting edge or atleast ride the wave of current fashion trends you'll be cool.
Skybar -the trendier than thou celeb watering hole.
You can't get in so don't bother! Don't feel bad, though. Carrottop can't get in, either.
Dress Code:
Strict dress code enforced: Fred Durst or this month's Playmate on your arm to get in.
Jeez. There's a million that always change. Right now, it's The Standard, Giant, Spundae, The 'Sky Bar', Chateau Marmont, etc. Look up a magnet city guide when you get there and see what's up for that night.
You name your poison. We got it! Plus, people don't care what they're doing when you take their picture. Just as long as they're in front of the camera.
Dress Code:
Whatever.
