    Thunder Mountain

Mt. Baldy is a true secret in Southern California. In fact, I have mixed feelings even mentioning it here; however...here goes: Mt. Baldy(Mt. San Antonio) is the highest mountain in Los Angeles County, at just over 10,000ft. Mt. Baldy Ski Area sits on two slightly lower peaks, facing the LA Basin. The facility is sparse but offers the biggest verticle(2100') in SoCal, and the gnarliest terrain. Why does nobody go here? Well, unlike the Big Bear/Arrowhead region, Baldy has no water source for making snow. Therefore, its opening dates are changeable, day to day, and there is virtually no trail maintenance. Hell, there are hardly trails for that matter. This suits me fine. The ski area is nearly deserted, even on weekends, and I'm fond of natural conditions and steeps. If that's not you, think twice. I highly recommend Baldy for expert skiers and sightseers. I do not recommend Baldy for anybody else. Snowboarders: there's almost no grooming, so unless you can rip it in the trees and bumps, head for Riverside.

Equipment: I purchased basic, straight-edge skis that I would use solely for Baldy. Rocks are everywhere, and you can take a chunk out of your ski without blinking; even separate an edge. Trashed rentals are available, but they must be at least twenty years old, and sizes are limited. Don't bother trying to rent. Or rent at Sport Chalet. I vote we trash all their skis as Sport Chalet is evil(editorial comment).

This is a follow-up to the main Mt. Baldy skiing tip. I wanted to include this picture of some of Baldy's extreme terrain and diving fall-lines. This is off the parking lot lift...

Equipment: As for equipment...well, if you fall, you'll just lose it.
