El Capitan is a bit younger than Graumans Egyptian and Grauman's Chinese, about three or four years. Originally it was a venue for "live" theater. Unfortunately the Great Depression and the World Wars, the interest and money for going to the theater vanished.

In order to survive, El Capitan began offering filmed entertainment. One of the first films to have it's Premiere was, "Citizen Kane," in 1941 and this was a boost for the theater and it's status in the film industry.

As with the rest of the city, El Capitan fell into disrepair and it was Disney who came to the rescue about 1989. They took two years to restore El Capitan. The interior is decorated with an elaborate East Indian theme, lovely wood carvings, comfortable seats, curtains that open up dramatically.

This historical part of Hollywood is a great place to take the kids on a hot summers day to find relief from the sun.

One of the famous theaters of Hollywood

El Capitan Theater is a favorite photo stop along the busy Hollywood walk of fame area fronting the entrance to the Kodak theater as it just sits across the street. It is one of the Theaters made by the original founders of the Grauman's Chinese Theater, Charles Toberman and Sid Grauman, it was envisioned as a theater for various plays in the roaring 30's and at present is owned by Disney.

I love art and architecture so when I stumbled upon this theatre on Hollywood Boulevard I had to stop and take notice. I did not attend a showing there but was in awe of the old architecture and art adorning the entrance way. Many may see it as garish though I thought the gold sculpture and brilliantly decorated marquee made for a fascinating look a this theatre. I happened to go by it one evening while there and found a line of people around the block to attend a show. So, though old it is pretty popular.

Located on Hollywood Blvd., the historic El Capitan Theatre is a fully restored movie palace. It was first opened in 1926 and was the site of several movie premiers. In recent years, many of Disney's feature films have premiered here, accompanied by live stage shows.
