Seeing the Sign is a must in LA or you haven't been to LA? You be the judge!
The Hollywood Sign sits on the hillside of Mount Lee, in the Hollywood Hills. This show biz icon is 450 feet long & 45 feet high. The Sign originally said "Hollywoodland" before it
was shortened in 1945. And, it's officially named as a historical monument in 1973.
This shot was taken from a gap between buildings along Hollywood Boulevard.
Another spot for the sign is @ Hollywood & Highland center. Go to the main courtyard or any levels above it.
When thinking of Hollywood you always think, movies stars, the walk of fame and the rich and a famous. However there is a famous landmark that cannot be missed... The Hollywood sign as seen on so many movies.
Best place to view is if you go up the hill close to the foot of the hill where its very visible. But its also visibile if you are at downtown Hollywood... there is a viewing balcony at the Kodak theatre where you can also see it and its good when wanting to have your picture taken.
This sign was erected in 1923 to advertise Hollywoodland real estate development. The last 4 letters fell down in an earthquake and the rest remained to become the famous landmark that it is today.
Although the sign is off limits now, you can still hike right by these cockeyed letters and get some good views along the way. You will be able to see the dome of the Griffith Park Observatory as well as downtown LA in the distance.
I doubt there isn't anyone who does not recognise this sign and relates it to Hollywood and the stars. Standing 50 feet tall and stretching 450 feet across the Hollywood Hills.
This famous Hollywood sign has been standing for more than 76 years and amazingly, weighs 450,000 pounds.
Who can come here and not take a picture of the Hollywood Sign? You are not allowed to go too close to it, but we drove as near as we could, passing some pretty big Mulholland Drive houses on the way. I don't even know who lives up there. Bruce Willis? I need to read more gossip mags.
...even though it's a fee to enter the grounds, a mile hike to get to the sign, and you still are a hundred yards away, not allowed to approach it.
I didn't make that trip, however, and simply took this picture from the Griffith Observatory.
My friend, a_debaser (do visit her page), has inspired me to post about my little secret about getting close to the Hollywood sign. Well, it's not *that* secret, but you get *extremely* close. Do this by taking Lake Hollywood in Tolouca Lake. You might have heard of this street because it's where Madonna used to live.
The best way to get to Lake Hollywood is to take Cahuenga north and drive it alongside the 101. Turn right at Barham. Turn right at Lake Hollywood. Keep following it past all the houses and you'll get to a fork in the road in an open area. You only have one choice (go straight) because going left you'll run into a sign that says "no access to Hollywood Sign."
Keep going alongside the LA Reservoir until you get to the dog park. If you get lost, in fact, just ask the locals for the dog park, and they'll guide you. Follow the curvy road and *boom* - suddenly you have closest view of Hollywood sign possible without getting arrested.
Beware: you can't stop along this stretch of road, so either take your pictures very quickly or turn around and park, then walk around the dog park for your photo ops.
I don't think you can see this picture that good. It is to much smog to see it unfortunatly.
Observe that this picture is taken in the summer when it is the most smog in the whole year.
But this is how the sign looks like from far away.
You'll be able to see the famous Hollywood sign from all over Hollywood, LA, and the surrounding area. It is just West of Griffith Park.
Go to the observatory when it's open, or just head to Griffith park's hills to get the best view of the sign. I know a couple people that hiked up the hill to it, but they said it was very dangerous. There are some fire roads you can walk on to get close, although I haven't personally done that...yet.
One of the best places to see the Hollywood sign
gives you also a great view over the LA in general.
The Mulholland drive that goes on the Hollywood
hills is nice to drive through as it is one of home
streets of many celebrities, I guess. I personally
didn't see any... :-) The view over LA is also a
must see as it is so popular from all those movies
and TV series... I don't know if it is safe to go
there at night.
Not much more to it! Good for those of us who can't be arsed walking too much. Was paid for by lots of rich and famous locals incl Alice Cooper if memory serves me correctly.
Just walking around the neighborhood can be interesting, it's really pretty and has a lot of pretty houses.
The way to get there was kind of treaky... anyway remember that there is a high fine to pay if you walk all the way to the sign.. and also there are 24 hours web cams to secure it,..
This picture taken from a hill near a famous Japanese restaurant supposed to show a long shot view of the Hollywood sign. Sadly, it is not visible in the morning mist.
The Hollywood sign is one of the most famous landmarks in Hollywood. I hiked to the top of it, even though it's illegal!
