  • Biplane Rides on LA's West Side at Santa Monica

The Black & White Biplane over the ocean.
    2 more images

Black & White Biplane flies two passengers side-by side in a gorgeous Waco open-cockpit biplane. The pilot sits in back, and two friends share the front cockpit, where the view is fantastic.

Black & White Biplane is the only company to offer biplane rides in the heart of Los Angeles. We're located just a mile from the beach at Santa Monica Airport, close to Venice, Beverly Hills, LAX, The Third Street Promenade, the Santa Monica Pier, Malibu, Downtown, Culver City or any of the other places you'll go when visiting Los Angeles. Taking the ultimate Los Angeles tour won't take you out of your way at all. And Black & White is green - a carbon neutral company.

First you arrive at the most exclusive terminal - Atlantic Aviation - at the most exclusive airport in America. The airplane is magnificent. It's like a flying Rolls-Royce. Everything about it is perfect. It's elegant and you sit in a wood and leather cockpit that's just like something out of the 30's.

Though the ride is hugely thrilling, it feels completely safe. Your pilot has more than 30 years of experience and the airplane is like something out of the Smithsonian - just perfect, a flying work of art.

The aircraft departs and you have your choice of tours. Malibu Beach, the Santa Monica Pier, the Hollywood Sign, Downtown, or south to the harbor and the Queen Mary. We'll fly over the heart of Hollywood and Sunset Strip. You'll see the lay of the land like never before, all the while thrilling at the pure joy of open-cockpit flight.

It's an adventure and a thrill. It's romantic and makes for a perfect date. The best ride is later in the day so that you can follow it with dinner at the Typhoon, Santa Monica Airport's superb Asian restaurant, or at the Hump, one of LA's best sushi places, both of which overlook the runway. As the sun sets you'll still be basking in the afterglow of your flight.

Come fly the Black & White Biplane for a ride you'll never forget. Gift certificates are available - these make original and unique presents. Great for dates, anniversaries, engagements or just plain fun and sightseeing.

This is the best city of the ones that form LA. Make sure you visit the 3rd street promenade. Here you will find a wide variety of shop, mostly clothes but still there are a lot of places that sell other stuff ( toy shops, panoramic pictures, etc, etc).
Also go to the pier...it's not great to be honest but worth a visit (it's near the promenade anyway).
The beach in Santa Monica is nice but I prefer places like Hermosa Beach or Huntington Beach.

Santa monica and the beaches - LA's beaches are huge! They are clean and great for people watching, most with big surf. You just have to hire a bike and follow the beach path. Good fun!

Venice - also with a great beach but also with market stools, street performers and also muscle beach where steriod lovers pump iron.

Hollywood - go see the sign, well, you cant miss it if youre in the area! Also go to the Hollywood walk of fame on Hollywood boulevard with the bronze meddalions of 2500 hollywood stars. Also, Manns Chinese theatre to grab a movie.

Beverley Hills - just drive through and look at the million dollar houses! and visit Rodeo Drive and see the thousand dollar price tags!

Universal Studios - ok for a day out. Go on the rides, probably Jurassic Park being the best, entry around $30.

Disneyland - definately for kids, I didnt enjoy it, about $30 entry.

    Santa Monica

The beaches and piers of Santa Monica (see photo) and Malibu are must see attractions. But even more beautiful are the beaches further south in the city. The nicest (and not so crowded ones) start south of Los Angeles International Airport. Take a map and go there.

Look up and see the sunsets. They are often wonderful, particularly in winter. This photograph has not been enhanced in any way, it's a straight shot out of my office window looking towards Santa Monica and the ocean.

    Searching for Giampiero

The beach at Santa Monica is not really for sunbathing and swimming. Most days you can't get near the water for the film crews shooting the latest episode of 'Baywatch' or 'Pacific Blue'. And keep a special lookout for the guy at the beachfront café sipping his decaffeinated cappuccino, a copy of last Monday's Gazzetta dello Sport in the side pocket of his backpack, as he hunches over his laptop, sighing and deleting another unbefitting VT account. Yes, you have found the incomparable Giampiero, Arbiter of Morals, Judge of the Good, Champion of Good Taste!

  • Atlantic?

I just wanted to point out that Santa Monica is not surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on its fourth side but rather the Pacific Ocean. Try and make sure you know your geography next time you post something that pertains to it.

Our class on Santa Monica beach

For $50 you'll get all the basics, from how to paddle out to how to stand up on the board. Wetsuits and rashguards are provided, as well as a training board (soft foam covering so you don't smash your face). Tons of fun, with a 5-1 maximum student-teacher ratio. Great class, highly recommended.

Santa Monica is beautiful. This picture was taken in 3rd Street Promenade, which is a walking street with beautiful lightings, little pushing carts selling handicrafts, and performers along the street. Lovely!

Bored while waiting for your flight at the airport?Catch a bus to Santa Monica Pier, walk along the pier and have a coffee. We had about 8 hours to wait for our connecting flight before we flew home so took the opportunity to do just this.
A chance to have a look at the real LA by gazing out the window and watching LA go by! It's a great way to spend your last hours in LA.

    Santa Monica Beach

Santa Monica is a place in the Los Angeles area that actually feels like a place. That is, it has an identity, it has boundaries, it's relatively small, and - best of all - you can actually walk to get around!
