The Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica
The Third Street Promenade is a great area to walk around and sample the local shopping, views and cuisine. The Promenade offers lots of shops (from Banana Republic to Barnes and Noble) and a number of cute cafes (I recommend Broadway Deli, I Cugini, Il Fornaio and Gaucho Grill). You can also check out a movie (new releases on Third St., art house selections on Second St.), hang out at a British pub (Ye Old King's Head on Santa Monica Bl. at Second Street) or just watch the street performers.
Third Street is covered with hexagon-shaped tile, and at both ends of the avenue stand large, topiary dinosaur fountains. An ivy-covered triceratops stands at the Promenade's southern end (across from the mall), surrounded by flowers, spewing water into a pool below. A Tyrannosaurus Rex awaits visitors at the street's north end.
In the center of Third Street are free-standing pavilions (which resemble Victorian greenhouses), with aged brass roofs. No traffic is allowed on this part of Third Street, so the area is exclusively for pedestrians. Colorful pushcarts, kiosks and vendors abound, while assorted street performers entertain the passing crowd.

Good idea, leaving the beach, said Fernanda. Let's move to a better place. And that was... shopping area, of course.
Do you believe that I supported the never ending series of malls, shops and boutiques without freezing completely? But I did.
Honestly, I survived!
Our friend took us to Santa Monica to see the pier but we really enjoyed a stroll on the 3rd Street Promenade. Its a really quaint stretch of shops and restaurants with steet performers and people coming off the beach to grab a bite.
Pedestrian Street at St Monica Boulevard
Convenient to park at Macy's and walked a few blocks to this pedestrian mall of late night shops, restaurants and cafes.
There are street performers and the atmosphere is festive especially on weekends.
Fun outdoor mall!
3rd St. is incredibly fun, with street performers (mimes, musicians, jugglers, etc.) adding to the relaxed ambience of this outdoor "mall." 3rd St. has everything from regular stores like Gap and Borders to boutique stores to restaurants. I love also how close it is to the water...after shopping or taking a stroll, I can walk south to the water and enjoy the beautiful views of the beach! Even though it can get crowded, I've always liked 3rd St. for a fun shopping experience.
THE Santa Monica shopping street
A great pedestrian shopping street where you can find lots of big chains like Victoria's Secret and Sephora. In the afternoon you can also find street artists here. Some better than others :-)
And there's a great pancake restaurant on one of the corners!
Santa Monica Beach
If you are looking for a pleasant beach destination while you are in Los Angeles then Santa Monica beach is a very good option. I would suggest heading out in time to get to the beach nice and early and then, after a day of sunbathing, grab a bite to eat in town. There town just off the beach consists of standard tourist fare, clothing stores, and animated street performers.
Great shopping, dining and people-watching
3rd St. Promenade is located a few streets from the beach, in Santa Monica. You can easily spend an entire day here, whether that be shopping in the various stores (i.e. the Gap, J.Crew, Old Navy, Bebe, Banana Republic, Sephora, Barnes and Nobles, etc--as well as many others, including Macy's and Robinsons-May Company, in the neighboring Santa Monica Place/Mall), eating at the many cafes and restaurants (i.e. Johnny Rocket's, Gaucho Grill, Broadway Deli, Coffee Bean & Tea Lef, etc), or watching a movie in one of the 2 multi-plex theaters. The "Promenade" tends to house several homeless people as well, so if this makes you uncomfortable, you should avoid going.
A place to walk
LA is notorious for being an unfriendly city for pedestrians. I'm not talking about crime or lack of pavement, but rather due to the simple practical problem of everything being so spread-out and far away from each other.
The 3rd street promenade in Santa Monica offers a remedy. It is located a few blocks off the ocean and with its many shops, restaurants and hotels you can spend a whole day and night here without having to jump into a car.
The area is lively and crowded with people who are shopping, sight-seeing, on their way to the restaurants, and also by the street artist performances. The performances are quite elaborate, with some of them coming with a group of 6-8 people with full props.
The only downside is there are a lot of homeless people in Santa Monica and it is a rather surreal sight, to see people shopping for $300 bag being asked for change just outside the shops they've just been into
Santa Monica - Third Street Promenade.
A few blocks away from the beach you'll find Third Street Promenade. Third Street Promenade is an exiting open-air pedestrain street pulsates with an international mix of people enjouying an eclectic blend of restaurants, unique retail shops, movie theatres and nighclubs.
The best in dining, shopping, entertainment and a non-stop kaleidoscope of street performers combine make Downtown Santa Monica and Third Street Promenade a favorite destination for visitors and residents alike.
Tip: Wait at the sign "be seated" and have your identification card with you. I didn't get a beer as I forgot to have my passport with me that day!

Santa Monica promenade -...
Santa Monica promenade - bustling, glamorous and beautiful, right next to the ocean. There are tons of clubs and bars and restaurants and things to see and do, beautiful people to watch, etc.
Umm we saw one TV star, one movie star, and one man selling consultations to a psychic cat, so I'd say this is one place with a bit of diversity.

Third Street Promenade at Santa Monica
This is an interesting and lively place for shopping. There are so many interesting and fancy shops here. You will have much fun seeing so many people wandering in this shopping area with you.
Third Street Excitement
Third Street Promanade was better than it was hyped up to be.The strret performers gives this area character. The sounds, shops, people and easily accesible(also cheap) parking made this party a blast. We also happened to stumble upon some paparazzi going nuts taking pictures and finding out that it was Brittny Spears stagette. The Pier is a great top off after the Promanade.

A great night out!
Best time to go would be on the weekends at night. Although traffic can be quite bad, its worth it once you get out and walk amongst the locals and other tourists. There are several street performers to entertain you as well as several bars and restaurants. There's a nice selection of stores as well suchc as Urban Outfitters. Its also located right next to Santa Monica Pier and the Santa Monica Place mall. This is a great place for people watching as you'll see all kinds.
3rd Street Promenade
Once there, no longer now. It was a hit when the movie Jurrasic Park made it's way to the world. People flocked to see what the shop offered, even I did, walked out with souvinier 'Ambers' at US10 a small piece.
Sadly when i went back a year and half later, the shop was gone..together with the fad. Oh well, I believe someone made some money while it lasted.
Now I await a Middle Earth shop... *grin*
