Be Alert: Car pool lane

  • If you are on the freeway coming from the East on the 10 and in the car pool lane and want to get to the North 5, make sure you GET OUT of the car pool lane well in advance. If you don't you will end up downtown and lost. I got stuck in the car pool lane thinking it would break off to the connecting freeways, but I was wrong. Got lost in downtown LA on the way to a concert. Eventually found my way back, but for the out of stater...it would be a nightmare.

  • For me, downtown LA is not really the place to be at night. During the week it is a ghost town, with most shops closing up around 6PM and the majority of people fleeing the city for surrounding areas. More recently, there has been a lot of condo and apartment conversions or building. Hopefully, that will rejuvenate the nights in LA. There are many parts of the city that are a little seedy, especially at night, so just be careful.

  • This is one you MUST follow. If it says no smoking, don't smoke. In LA smoking is illegal in most public places.

  • PLEASE be careful when walking Fifi or Fluffy at night, especially in areas such as Bel Air, Brentwood, Sherman Oaks, Burbank, Glendale, Hollywood Hills, and anywhere you might glimpse a mountain. Coyotes have very sadly come down from the mountains and canyons and eaten people's pets, and once the coyote is there, nothing will stop him. So be careful at night.

  • Earthquakes and all of the usual precautions one should take when traveling in a large city. Keep alert and stay on your toes while in the streets.

    Like any big city, L.A. has its own (gasp!) crime problems. It's not all Disneyland. If it looks dangerous, it probably is. Don't park your car anywhere you feel uncomfortable leaving it. And stay in populated, well-lit areas at night.

  • Dont leavy anything precious Lying around, I had my flight bag stolen. I was warned not to wear a handbag in open sight and to keep out of various areas of Hollywood.

  • This is a dangerous city. please be aware of your surroundings. If you rent a car take a detailed map of where you are going. Frankly it is my suggestion you spend the money and take a taxi when you have to find something.

  • Los Angeles is fun and huge so my only advice is 'please don't get lost' - - there are areas in the downtown area that are not safe at night (don't stroll down there) nor get disoriented with freeways, there are many deserted empty factories in south central part of L.A. -- plan your road trips ahead or better go with organized tour buses.

  • There are parts of LA that you probably don't want to be in at night. Violence, unfortunately is part of American life.
