PCH, light traffic...

Those of us who live in Los Angeles talk of our "accidents" with caprice and disregard. There are accidents ALL THE TIME. Never, in any of my travels, have I found a more incompetent population of drivers. If you drive here, be very, VERY aware, and super-concious. The idea of "looking in a mirror before changing lanes" seems to have been skipped in Driver's Ed. Those "CHiPs" episodes with calamitous accidents and ludicrous, air-bound vehicles? Yeah, that really happens here! Let me assure you: Los Angeles is continuously ranked among the worst cities for crime in the U.S. But, the real danger lies in the driving. Our insurance rates are sky-high for a reason. Oh, and this being the holidays, there will be numerous traffic delays due to "Christmas trees in lanes". Ay Chihuahua. You really have to plan your days according to traffic patterns. If you're here during the week, anytime between 8 am and 10 am, 3 PM to 7PM, is going to be high traffic periods. It can take you an hour or more to go 12 miles. Ask the locals what they think of traffic patterns before you jump on a stalled "freeway."

Be sure you know exactly how to get to where you want to go. The freeways in LA dominate your mode of travel. If you take a wrong exit, you could end up in a very bad neighborhood. Thus putting you and your family/freinds at a great risk. Buy a "Thomas Guide" which should help you with driving directions or try Mapquest online.

Traffic

If you drive in Los Angeles, you will get stuck in a traffic jam. I wasn't there long enough to figure out exactly when rush hour is but it seemed like any time of day I would get on a freeway, there would be a traffic jam, sometimes due to an accident (and a gapers delay on the other side), sometimes just because it was the wrong time of day. If you have more than one person in your car, keep an eye out for car pool lanes, they don't always move much faster than traffic but sometimes they do.

In alot of parking lots in LA there are sharp spikes that will shred your tires if you try to go out the wrong way. Stop lights on exit ramps getting on the hwy are unusual. Some areas of town are dangerous, Compton, South Central...Watch what part of town you are in.

LA is a tangle of freeways and sprawling suburbs and without a car you are seriously handicapped. Even with a car you will have to learn the system of the freeways and have some patience in dealing with the traffic, it's a nightmare. . Always allow plenty of time to get to where you are going especially in rush hours. On one occasion it took 2 1/2 hours by shuttle to get from LAX to Anaheim in peak traffic. .

Dismayed, frustrated and overwhelmed by jostling traffic, multiple interchanges and cloverleaves, the only way I survived LA’s gridlock was to have a navigator. Even then I zoomed over two lanes barely making my interchange connection. I wasn’t the only one. Constant vigilance is a lifesaver.

L.A. is big. Very big. 20 minutes is what most Los Angelenos will say it takes to get between any two given points in the city. 45 minutes is what it actually takes (75 during rush hour).

This must sound reeeally funny to the average American... but I was almost knocked down by the cars whilst crossing the streets of LA! I mean, can you blame me?? They were all driving on the WRONG side of the road! Sigh.... If you're coming from UK/Europe or from Asia, please be careful. If you normally look to your right for approaching cars, just remember that - when in the USA, look to YOUR LEFT instead! Man, it took me almost ONE WEEK to get my bearings correct! :-(
