Malibu Country Mart: So this is downtown?

by garridogal Written Oct 7, 2013

So we asked the valet at Duke's if Malibu had a downtown. He sent us to the Malibu Country Mart which is a series of strip malls. Sure, they're high end strip malls, but strip malls nonetheless. Not that we were looking to shop but most of the stores were closed anyway.

MALIBU BEACH SUPPLY COMPANY: TOURIST SHOP AT END OF MALIBU PIER

Let the folks back home know you went to Malibu
    4 more images

This is your chance to kill 7 birds with one stone. 1.) Walk out to the end of the Malibu Pier on the Pacific Ocean. 2.) Watch the surfers at Malibu Point, Surfriders Beach. 3.) Look at Carbon Beach and Billionaires Row of beach homes from the seaside. 4.) Shop for that Malibu souvenir at the Malibu Beach Supply Company. 5) Get a bite to eat at Rudy's Shake Shack 6.) Take a boat tour of the Malibu coastline. 7.) This one is an option, go fishing. It is an ocean pier, after all.

Lots of trinkets, but lots of quality merchandise is available at the store. Malibu logo items and toys for tots. Books on the area and posters as well. T-Shirts, Sweatshirts and baseball hats. Even a little candy is sold here. Here is where you get your whale watching boat tour or the coastal cruise. Worth the look-see, if you stroll out to the end of the Malibu Pier. Open 7 days a week, 10am to 6pm.

What to buy: Hey, I am a sucker for baseball hats but if you are a tourist from out of town, a nice T-Shirt lets the folks back home know you have been to Malibu.

The boutique boasts organic designs and features exposed raw ash wood and white lacquer. It is open, airy and bright. The store carries the three brands designed by Oliver Peoples, including Paul Smith Spectacles and Mosley Tribes. Customers can take advantage of the on-site optician who can provide consultations, custom frame fittings and prescription services.

What to buy: Premium optical eyewear and sunglasses!

What to pay: The average cost of an Oliver Peoples frame is between $285 - $450 (no script), but twice a year they have sales that offer the average consumer an amazing opportunity to acquire designer styles.

John's Garden: Get Gourmet and Healthy Snacks at John's Place

    snack shop in Malibu, California
    1 more image

I happened to make my way here for a little snack and came out intrigued by the variety of organic and all-natuarl food , snacks and drink. One would love to stumble into this place during a long roadtrip to refuel and not feel guilty of what would be comsumed. Unfortunately, most pit-stops on road trips are at ho-hum gas stations and shady hole-in-the-walls with good tasting but oh so bad-for-you junk. John's Gardens, good ol' unassuming kind of place at the Country Mart town center, offers a very healthy alternative for snacking. In my search of gummies bears (and friends), mixed nuts and fruits, and other candies, John's has become the place where I can find everything with all-natural ingredients. There is also a deli, a variety of fruits and vegeatables here. The cashiers are super, super friendly and knowledgable of product.

What to buy: any organic granolas, healthy (all-natural) drinks like juices, teas or smoothies; sugar-free candies

What to pay: I say up to $10-$20 for a combinations of snacks and drink, lunches are from about $5-$15

Adamson House Book Shop: Malibu Tile Replicas

by pigletsmom Written May 5, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Lovely replica tile design from RTK Studios

The book shop on the premises located in a little shack is quite small, but actually has some very good souvenirs.

What to buy: The shop sells art and history books about the house, area, and Malibu Tiles. The shop also sells wonderful replicas
of Malibu Tiles by the very talented Keit Studios in Ojai.
They are a local pottery shop that specializes in replicas of Malibu and Arts & Crafts Tile. Really beautiful craftsmanship
and designs. One of a kind tiles that are truly modern works of art on an old theme. You can actually buy overruns at their studio in Ojai if you need more variety and quantity. Or if you have the money, you can special order.

What to pay: I think the small tiles start at about $10-$15, and go up for the larger ones.
