    NAWS

by blaird Updated Mar 4, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

On your drive to Point Mugu, you may see signs for NAWS. NAWS is the Naval Air Weapons Station in Point Mugu. It has station facilities and supports for Naval Air Warfare Center, Weapons Division.

I am told services include air terminal, air traffic control, firefighting and crash crews.

    Cactus

by blaird Updated Mar 4, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I don't know much about the cactus, as you walk along the mountains facing the coastline you will undoubtably pass by a number of cacti. Some have deep purple fruit on them, but even if they don't they are quite amazing as they can number in the hundreds in a small area around you.

    A very romantic cactus!

    About Point Mugu State Park

by blaird Written Mar 3, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Point Mugu State Park is a park of the Santa Monica Mountains, which are really very different from the San Gabriels just north of LA. There is about 5 miles of coastline, with steep cliffs, rough hills, canyons, and flatter plains within. There are more than 70 miles of hiking trails.

The park is 15,000 acres, and has the Boney Mountains State Wilderness Area.

    California Poppy

by blaird Written Mar 3, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you are lucky, you will see the California Poppy along the trails in Point Mugu. It is a pretty small annual flower that is orange and shaped like a flat bowl. I am told it blooms between April & August, but I saw this one in February!

It is the state flower of California and I guess the blooms close each night at sunset or on dull days.

    Good luck!

    Point Dume

    by giampiero6 Written Feb 25, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Point Dume is a lovely jutting whale hump of land that sticks out at the northern end of the Santa Monica bay on the northern end of Malibu. The point itself is a beautiful point covered with flowers and succulents and offers a couple of cool lookouts from which you can sometimes see whales migrating. On the rocks far below you can usually hear and see some sea lions honking and roaring and you might see some dolphins. On the rock cliff of the point, you'll see lots of folks rock climbing up the face. If you cruise around the south side, there's a great little beach that you will have to take stairs down to. It's a very pretty beach amid cliffs.

Hiking!! Or mountain biking!!! Malibue is one of THE best placest to go hiking because of the Santa Monica Mountains. There are miles and miles of trails! Recently, we did the Upper Solstice Canyon hike which was amazing!! Great views of the ocean, Santa Monica, Palos Verdes, and the Malibu valleys.
The sheer beauty of this area with its limestone formations and dense trees. Can you believe such a place exists within LA County?!???

    Cool off at The Grotto

by rasquache Written Apr 14, 2009

A short hike from Circle X Ranch brings you to a grotto in a small creek. There is a pool and a natural shower. This is a cool spot to relax and explore.

As you leave Malibu, instead of taking the Pacific Coast Highway turn onto Malibu Canyon Road. As you reach the top of the ridgeline you will see some magnificent views of the ocean and the LA Basin.

A great place to go and get a great tan is Zuma Beach located north of Malibu. At the south end of the beach is Point Dume, a popular rock climbing location.

Zuma Beach in early morning. Didn't see too many beachcombers. Only the beach patrol truck enjoyed the morning mist.

    Malibu Pier

Not a fancy pier. No amusement park like the Santa Monica Pier. In the early morning, I only saw a few locals cast their lines here.
