Probably the biggest draw to Malibu is the beach. Since California is on the coast its not hard to find yourself ended up walking along the beach or even going for a swim. Surfers-- They are BIG here and can also be violent. It was published in the Malibu Paper about a "gang" called MLO which will go around and key your car, or pick a fight with you if you SURF on their turf! (MLO stands for Malibu Locals Only and you will find it tagged at tunnels connecting Malibu to the Valley.) No matter where you go along the shore whether its in Malibu or Manhattan Beach people are very territorial of their little claim of "beach." EVERYONE loves the beaches here because of the long, wide spread of sand and cool water with good waves. You will always find beautiful women in little bikini's and cute as a button surfers. But the "bums" also like the beaches to and often find them their home. At night its kind of risky to walk along Venice Beach in Venice, California since a lot of weirdo's and homeless make it there home there and please don't think I am being harsh...for some, "weirdo" is an understatement.
Unique Suggestions: The beaches are by far one of the best things to do in Malibu besides going wine tasting, or hiking. Since Malibu isn't really a "city" with lots of buildings and activities to do, most people find it the best place to kick your feet up and relax. But for some of those who are into getting out doors DONT MISS any of the nature wildlife parks with all the many trails and sites to see. The beach is also good too... but i suggest you meet a local and befriend them, because they know all the secret uncrowded spots. I like to horseback ride and Malibu has a lot of good riding lodges where you can take a very lovely horse trail through some canyon to a waterfall or even gallop along the beach!
Fun Alternatives: Like to drink? The Malibu Inn is a bar/restaurant where live bands come to play from around Malibu and even the valley and its a good place to meet locals. Its usually fairly busy and the atmosphere is upbeat and lively and everyone is having a good time listening to the music. While some bands are better then others, everyone just goes with the flow and chills. The foods alright. Just your basic hamburger joint with beer. If your more into finer dinning Cross Creek which is located in downtown Malibu has it all. It has the cutest little playground for the children and how its built is ideal for dinner, a movie, and even a little shopping too! The only movie theater Malibu has is here and it only plays two movies. But most people like it better that way since the theater is styled like an old fasion theater. There are ice cream parlors and garden cafes and even five star restaurants that are styled after old European country sides and such. Its really the only shopping area and hang out besides the beach for anyone who isn't into the whole "i love nature" thing.
Even in summer the costal fog can roll in early so if you wait too long, you might get trapped in the fog!
