    Convict Lake

by mtncorg Written May 9, 2003

A few miles south of Mammoth Lakes, lies the turn off to Convict Lake, so-named for a gun battle between law officers and - big surprise - some escaped convicts - back in 1871. The road goes up alluvial slopes, up to the massive glacial moraine that encompasses the lake. There is a concessionaire at the lake head where boats can be rented. A large campground below the lakehead. A trailhead goes up into the backcountry from here as well - up to a series of beautiful lakes 3-7 1/2 miles in - Mildred, Dorothy, .... The mountains are folded in fantastic layers. You can get an idea by looking at the mountains rising from the west side of the lake. But the view that the picture shows is looking south over the lake at the very dramatic spire of Mt Morrison, rising to 12268 feet. Just to wander around the lake late in the day, is magic in of itself.

Downhill (Alpine) skiing. I had the opportunity to learn to ski over my holiday vacation in California. I took a lesson by instructor and quickly progressed to the more challening slopes. They were trying to create a nice learning atmosphere and prevent us from having fear of the speed.
Drinking hot chocolate , observing nature , learning a challenging sport and meeting a variety of nice fun people.

  • SKIING & SNOWBOARDING!

by mrjade Written Aug 25, 2002

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Skiing/snowboarding in Mammoth can be as exciting or relaxing as you desire. From equiptment hire to the bus ride home, the whole experience is organised and easy going and the staff are really helpful (they even go round the runs on snowmobiles after the chair lifts close and carry you to safety!) . The slopes are wide, smooth and beautifully pisted every evening. There are a lot of runs designed for snowboarders from learner to pro - they even have night skiing and cool music playing on the exhillarating 'Unbound' run! When visiting at easter the queues are almost non-existant and are all chair lifts or cable cars which make life alot easier. The snow is not ideal at this time of year, but it is still a classy experience. Some of the views are truly spectacular!

The skiing up at Mammoth is awesome! It's about 5-6 hours from Los Angeles and well worth the drive.

Yosemite is the most visited of the National Parks in the US and it is supremely beautiful. Be sure to see the Ahwahnee Lodge/Hotel, which is one of the most rustic and beautiful in the world.

Take a boat out on Lake Mary. It's nice to take it out to go fishing or even to just float around in the middle of the lake while sipping a cold beer!

A relaxing day in the sun....
