Most people who ski at Mammoth reach the resort by car. Because of the surrounding geography, this means that nearly everyone is from southern California (Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego). Any narrow roads from San Francisco and northern California that traverse the wall of Sierra Nevada Mountains close in winter because of snow. The drive from Los Angeles takes about 5 hours and is supposedly very scenic, and it is even longer from San Diego. Scenic as the drive might be, it is not how I reached Mammoth! Only recently (in 2010?) flights from nearby California cities were introduced to Mammoth. I flew from LAX to Mammoth Lakes Aireport (MMH) and back on Alaska Airlines for a little over $200 (would be more if you booked last minute) and it was quick and smooth trip, which saved me the headache of driving endlessly. Other flights (on Alaska and United) connect Mammoth to the San Francisco, Orange County and San Diego airports. The MMH airport is a mere 10 minute drive from the base of the resort, and free shuttles are available if you are staying at one of the Mammoth-owned hotels (e.g. Village Lodge, etc). I highly recommend it!

If you choose to go out at night and you are not in walking distance to your condo/hotel, and the shuttles are no longer running, a taxi cab is another option. Though cabs are pretty scares, they will take you anywhere around town for a $5 per person fee. I suggest having a taxi number handy just in case. You don't want to be stranded in the cold.
