Manhattan Beach Things to Do

  • The Pier

This is an attractive long pier that starts at the foot of Manhattan Beach Blvd in the heart of downtown. The struxcture itself is attractive and interesting, it has nice views of town, the beach, and the sunset, and it has a little cafe at the end. It is also a popular place for fishing.

  • The Beach

If you want to go to the best, overall beach in Los Angeles county, forget about overhyped Santa Monica and come down to Manhattan, "the Pearl of the South Bay". Though packed at peak times in the height of summer weekends, you will find fewer people and more of a local feel. Most locals won't mind new tourists in sharing in the paradise. The...

  • The Strand

The Strand, technically a street, is a wonderful pedestrian/bicycle path that goes right along the beach through town. It is divided into two parts: an upper for pedestrians and a lower one closer to the beach for bicyclists. It is very pelasant and scenic, as well as conventient, allowing one to comfortably and easily walk along the beach from one...

Manhattan Beach Restaurants

  • Rock'nFish

Rock N' Fish is a classic locals restaurant in Manhattan Beach and is definitely our go-to restaurant when we want solid, high quality food. Honestly, I don't think I've ever been disappointed with a meal here (and I eat here at least once per week). In addition to a wide variety of fish options, there's great steaks, as well as a quality wine list...

  • Pancho's

I love Pancho's! I've been going here since I was young. The ambience, location, and the food make it a great "beach city" Mexican Restaurant. The bar upstairs is great for drinks and appetizers. They have a huge TV to catch sporting events. I truly reccomend going downstairs in the dining area for a meal. They have a great assortment of plants...

  • The Kettle

When I attended college in Chicago, we always headed to Denny's for The Grand Slam at any time of day or night. The Kettle knocks the socks off any craving you might have, and then some!!! Any meal you have here is going to be great. Comfort food at its best.

It was easy to find, the hotel shuttle left us at the corner and we only had to walk cross the road. You can not miss the big sign on the wall isn’t it? LOL Now you wonder where are the members?

  • Energizing Nightlife!

Manhattan Beach developed a different kind of energy in the evening hours and what ever your age or interests, there is most likely something for you. Look at these beautiful, chic young women! • Towne Restaurant

Towne is a fun, little, dark bar on Manhattan Avenue that serves great food and interesting martinis. It gets TOO crowded on Friday and Saturday nights, but the rest of the week is a safe bet for fun and crowd-free cocktails. Valet on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night--runs about US $7.Interesting Fact: Towne is named after the owners mother, Sue...

Manhattan Beach Transportation

  • By Taxi

Between the Strand and the intersection of Manhattan Ave and Manhattan Beach Blvd, there is a designated taxi zone to conveniently take you around the beach area or beyond. At a given time, there are about 3 or 4 in wait along the sidewalk, so there is no wait. Main Official Manhattan Beach taxicabs include: M. Beach Taxi Cab, All Yellow Cab and...

  • By Car

Getting to Manhattan Beach by car is the most convenient mode of travel in my opinion. Your own car, a rented car or even a hired Limo. Los Angeles International Airport is just a few miles up the road from Manhattan Beach and at the airport there are lots of car rental companies that will service your needs.

  • Bicycle Lane!

Californians are known to be health conscious and none more so than those who live near a beach! Many reasons for that I'm sure. Just as many ways to stay healthy too, like riding a bike. So many people in Manhattan Beach ride bikes that there is a lane especially for them! I thought it was just a sidewalk until I nearly got run over. It was after...

Manhattan Beach Shopping

The problem is that the shop hasn't opened yet--and it may never become a shop--it is an on-line boutique. However, here are some pretty nice items offered to those of us who attended the Manhattan Beach VT Meeting 1-3 August 2003.VT Staff are not only kind, interesting and fun to be around, they are generous of heart as well as offering these...

  • Smarter grocieries shopping

I am European and I like "fancy" foods and the best place to shop for that is at Trader Joe's. Forget Ralphs or Vons, all looks the same and boring. But at Trader Joe's, you can find many things that those big supermarkets do not have AND at a much cheaper price. For example, fresh Basil, you will pay the same price but the container at Trader...

  • Beach Events Celebrated Here!

It seems that the City of Manhattan Beach likes to offer the venue for fun events such as Volleyball Competitions. While there for the competition, VT was entered in, I noticed that a bigger Volleyball Competition was scheduled for the very next weekend. On the City's website, I noticed a series of concerts in the park offered. Always something...

Manhattan Beach Warnings and Dangers

  • Parking

Though Manhattan Beach seems to be an oasis in the jungle-sprawl of Los Angeles, one of L.A.'s hardships have spilled over into to the Manhattan Beach area. Traffic. Cars, cars everywhere but not a parking space to be had, and when a parking space is found near your destination, you must pay and the time allotted is not very long. However, before...

  • Safety Issues

This goes without saying: You should never drink and drive, but around here...You definitely don't want to drink and drive. Cabs are plentiful on Friday and Saturday nights. You have no excuse. You could even ride a bike - I guess it's a little safter than driving.

    more
  • Fog / Smog

Along the beach looking north, past the pier, past the palm trees, past the lovely homes, an ominous sign of Los Angeles civilization looms. An advantage Manhattan Beach has, is that the wind usually blows from west to east and the smoke from these stacks probably rarely ruin a day spent at this beach. However, if you are sensitive to pollutants...

The Manhattan Beach pier is lovely to gaze at from the beach but to venture down the wooden boardwalk is an entirely different adventure in the summertime. Once on the boardwalk, you have fisherman (typically from inland Los Angeles) who are catching fish, gutting them on the spot, and leaving their entrails for the seagulls and pedestrians....

Manhattan Beach What to Pack

  • Dress to Impress, or not!

Even in winter, it is possible to wear beach attire most days. However, after the sun goes down, you will most likely need something warmer to wear. Also, if you intend to join the locals at any of the night spots, you might consider dressing up a bit as this seems to be an up-scale beach town and some places seem to have a dress code.

  • Packing List

If you're planning to play on the beach a lot, I would suggest you bring a bag you won't mind getting sandy. I would also suggest that the bag be portable, like a sports duffel bag or a small backpack. During spring, summer, and fall the days can get pretty warm, 70 to mid 80s farenheit. Since you'll be right on the coast, the evenings can get...

  • Packing List

The weather is great all year round so definitely bring shorts in the spring and summer time. Bring a light jacket for the autumn months. There is no camping allowed here, but just north of Manhattan Beach, is El Segundo. They have a little motor home beach camping area. Bring your surfboard, if you surf!!!

Volleyball seems to be quite popular in Manhattan Beach. Besides the event VT was entered in there were signs up announcing another competition for the next weekend. Plenty of Nets provided, but you have to bring your own ball. On this day, it seemed that you must be dressed in some sort of outrageous or silly costume.Sounds fun doesn't it?

Manhattan Beach has an interesting history, before it was a town, it was part of the ten-mile ocean frontage of Rancho Sausal Redondo, which means "Round Clump of Willows.
