To or From Wine Country
Headed to Wine Country from Medocino? Headed to Medocino from Napa or Sanoma? Be sure to take Highway 128. Its a scenic drive through the rolling backcountry which includes famous wine regions, a redwood forest and the coast. We took this route recently to get from Fort Bragg to Calistoga. The coast in this region is beautiful. Shortly after turning east on 128 we passed through the tall redwoods in Navarro River Redwoods State Park. The forest is dense and dark green with immensely tall trees.
This route then took us through Boonville, Anderson Valley, Cloverdale, Geyserville, and on to Calistoga. For a short stretch between Cloverdale and Geyserville the highway joins with the larger 101 Highway.
This is a great route if you like wine tasting because there are many vineyards along the way.
You can't be in a hurry when driving this road because its narrow and often curvy. But its beautiful -- In August, when we were there, the country provides another reminder of why California is called "The Golden State" -- all of the grassy hillsides become a golden color in the late summer sun. The oaks stand out in sharp contrast against the landscape.

The BEST way to get to...
The BEST way to get to Mendicino from San Francisco is to take the Pacific Coast Highway (US 1). It takes about 5 hours and lots of twists and turns but it's worth it. The alternate route is to travel north on Highway 101 to Cloverdale and then west on HIghway 128. Turn north on US 1 and travel 10 miles to Mendicino.
In town, just travel on foot to find the most interesting areas.
