Explore Mineral King
Skywatch
kevanrijn Says:
Some of the most beautiful sunsets, sunrises and night skies I have ever seen, I saw in Mineral King. Because you are already nearly at 8,000 ft. elevation at the trailhead, by the time you reach a campsite you will be over 9,000 feet if you are backpacking. The atmosphere...
Hike up to White Chief Meadow
kevanrijn Says:
Chewy has described most of the hiking trails in Mineral King. But since this trail isn't already covered--and it is one of the most scenic/interesting as well as one of the least travelled--I felt ought to cover it. The hike is more difficult than some--overall it's rated...
Fish for trout in the lakes
kevanrijn Says:
I'm not an angler, but I do know that fishing is allowed in Mineral King and the surrounding wilderness. You will need a license though, and the rules about what you can fish for and where and so forth are complicated and change from time to time. Fishing licenses and tackle...
The Eagle Sink Hole
Jhsu Says:
The Eagle Lake trail is cut through by two water streams before reaching the Sink Hole, which is a big hole into which a water stream disappears. The water stream re-emerges as one of the water streams that cuts through the trail below. It is a facinating geological...
Beulah
chewy3326 Says:
Beulah is the remains of a townsite built here in the 1800's, when gold was supposedly discovered in the White Chief Valley (which gave the valley the name "Mineral King." There's not much to do here, though. You can reach Beulah by driving to the Eagle-Mosquito Parking...
Mineral King Road
chewy3326 Says:
From Three Rivers, this 25-mile long road winds torturously up the East Fork Kaweah Valley, making over 600 turns. The road is mostly one-lane and narrow, with many blind turns. However, the scenery is magnificent; from along much of the road, you'll have views of Sawtooth...
Black Wolf Falls
chewy3326 Says:
You can take a short walk to this small waterfall near the Sawtooth Parking Area. The waterfall isn't exactly impressive, but you get good views of the valley and its surrounding peaks along the way. From the Sawtooth Parking Area, follow the road southeast across Monarch...
Eagle Lake Trail
chewy3326 Says:
This is the best trail that I hiked in Mineral King. From the Eagle-Mosquito Parking Area, hike south on the Eagle Lake Trail. The trail begins by climbing gently up the slope of the valley. The first mile provides fantastic views of the Mineral King Valley. Then you reach...
Cold Springs Trail
chewy3326 Says:
This wonderful, short 1-mile one-way trail begins at the Cold Springs Campground and ends at the Eagle-Mosquito Parking Area. It's a good early morning hike. From the trailhead, the small, narrow trail leads through aspens and meadows with intrepretative signs along the way...
Silver City Resort: Rustic Cabins in Paradise
chewy3326 Says:
This beautiful resort has cabins and chalets for rent in a subalpine forest, with a view across the valley to sharp and snowcapped peaks. Run by Connie and Norman Pillsbury, the resort also has a restaurant that serves great fruit pies, and a store that sells anything you...
Silver City Restuarant & Store: High Mountain Food
Helpfulness
chewy3326 932 reviews
Silver City Resort's Restuarant is the best (well, the only) restuarant in the Mineral King Valley. The menu isn't expansive; it consists mainly of burgers and sandwiches, and sometimes fried chicken specials. Still, the setting is comfortable; if you sit indoors, the walls are lined with photos of the area; if you sit outdoors, you can enjoy the sights of large trees nearby and snow-covered granite peaks across the valley. Also recommendable are Connie's fruit pies, which are well-known and delicious (and a good dessert after a full day of hiking).
Favorite Dish: While the food is good, the pie is the best. I think the fruit pies are about $2 a slice, and come in flavors like Razzle-Dazzle and Fruit of the Forest.

"Smarter than the average bear"
kevanrijn Says:
is what Yogi Bear used to say--and that's as good a description of the bears of the Sierra as any. Remember the antics Yogi used to get up to when trying to abscond with the pic-i-nic basket? It's nothing compared to what a real bear will do when trying to steal your food....
Keep your distance from Bambi
kevanrijn Says:
There are a multitude of deer in Mineral King. Most of them will let you approach fairly close before they (hopefully) run off. However, believe it or not, deer can be dangerous. There are several ways in which they can be dangerous to humans. In rutting season (autumn) when...
Marmots
chewy3326 Says:
Probably the worst part of an early-summer Mineral King experience is the prescense of marmots (also known as woodchucks). When marmots in the Mineral King Valley wake from their winter hibernation, they often lack salt, which they can't get until late summer. So, they've...
Make sure you bring it with you!
kevanrijn Says:
Make sure you bring everything you are going to need, 'cause you most likely can't buy it here! There is a small general store at Silver City which carries some commonly used camping/backpacking supplies and food, but the selection is very limited and they may be out of what...
Preparing for Paradise
chewy3326 Says:
If you're staying at one of Silver City Resort's Rustic Cabins, bring your own mattress cover, etc. The resort provides pillows and a mattress. If you're staying in a comfy cabin or chalet, you don't need to worry.
Okay, let's get this straight: It may be 95 degrees in...
Sawtooth Peak
chewy3326 Says:
Of all the peaks of Mineral King Valley, none of them are as prominent, dominating, and beautiful as the sharp Sawtooth Peak, a granite mountain that forms the crest of the Great Western Divide in the Mineral King Area. The peak is visible from everywhere around Mineral...
View of the valley
chewy3326 Says:
There are millions of good viewpoints in Mineral King- in other words, find your own. You can get a good view over the East Fork Kaweah as well as some Sierran peaks if you walk along the Mineral King Road between Cold Springs and Eagle-Mosquito Trailhead (we did this twice....
