    Modesto

    Welcome to Modesto!

Favorite thing: When one enters Modesto, you travel beneath an arch displaying the city's motto: Water, Wealth, Contentment, Health.

I was curious about this, so I did a little reading. Modesto developed along with the railroad in 1870. Water was an important issue right off and one of the first organizations established was the 'Modesto Water Irrigation District' in 1887.

At that time a competition was held to select a town motto. One of the town citizens, Sam Harbaugh, was paid $3 for his winning entry, which is used today.

These words symbolize the role that water and agriculture have played in the development of this community. I think they are still appropriate for today.

FYI: Modesto means modesty in Spanish.

    Mr T's Delicate Donut Shop

Favorite thing: Mr TS Delicate Donut Shop

How can one not be tempted by a shop of this name. We stopped in while moving my friends up here. Can I say they were great. No.
But I loved the name. And in a town with more fast food than anywhere I have ever seen - at least this place has character.
    Keep on trucking Modesto!

Fondest memory: swimming after a long day of moving someone in the heat...

And no, Mt. T of said A-Team has no affiliation with the donuts here.

Favorite thing: Whether moving to Modesto, or just passing through, you MUST eat at El Faro mexican restaurant on McHenry Avenue. YUM YUM!!

Fondest memory: My fondest memory of Modesto will always be having my daughter here. I spent the first part of my pregnancy in the Bay Area (Mountain View), and the remainder in Modesto. The medical community is more attentive and 'warmer' here than in bigger cities. The staff at Doctor's Medical Center are wonderful people.
