I'm listing Tresetti's World Cafe in my restaurant tips because our guidebook recommended it, along with Galletto's Ristorante. We didn't have time to visit more than one restaurant, so the information I'm posting is from their website.
Tresetti's Chef Ramiro has served as Chef de Cuisine under Wolfgang Puck and has worked in the restaurant business for thirty years. Ramiro has opened and established seven new restaurants in his career and is known for his creativity in formulating new recipes.
Here's a sampling of entrees from the menu:
House Made Tri Colored Raviolis-stuffed with roasted sweet potatoes, gorgonzola and pecans, seved with fresh tarragon alfredo sauce, tomatoes concassee and drizzled with basil oil
Grilled Filet Mignon
Seafood Risotto-Main lobster, scallops, prawns, snap peas, wild mushrooms, lobster cream, tomato confit
Grilled Vanilla Bean Brined Port Chop-topped with praline butter, served over sharp cheddar cheese grits, accompanied by house made succotash
Tressiti's say they "feature fine world fare in a casual, fun and relaxing atmosphere".
I would have liked to have spent more time in Modesto so that we could have tasted Chef Ramiro's offerings. The restaurant is well thought of, so why not stop by if you're in the area?
Galleto Ristorante was listed in our guide book as a great place to find northern Italian fare. When we stepped in, the restaurant was not officially open yet but they allowed us to sit inside while preparations were made.
I thought this gesture was extremely nice, so we looked forward to dining here. While we waited, we sat at a marble counter surrounding the bar area. Jim whiled away the time by perusing the Modesto Bee newspaper (picture 4).
The decor in this elegant dining room was Tuscan, no surprise there (picture 2). The outdoor terrace resembled that of an Italian villa complete with classical elements (picture 3). A private party was to take place there later in the evening, otherwise it would have been a lovely place to dine.
Jim and I split a Galletto salad, which was primarily romaine lettuce, parmesan cheese and croutons. I ordered fettuccine and chicken blended with spinach, basil, sundried tomatoes and parmesan cheese. The entrees could be ordered in half or full portions--I wisely chose a half portion. It was excellent! We were much too full for dessert, so we passed on that.
Other entrees on the menu are:
Lobster and shrimp ravioli sauteed with shallot, diced zucchini and lobster reduction
Trenette pasta tossed with pesto, potato and green bean al pesto.
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Galletto Ristorante and can highly recommend it!
For a touch of the old days, stop by A & W Restaurant--just look for the vintage cars in the parking lot out front. Expect to find the usual burger fare here.
We went inside and took a look at the dining area and decided we wanted a restaurant with air-conditioning. Unfortunately, this local dive only had ceiling fans--but that adds to the image if you don't mind it! It was hot that day, so we didn't stick around for long.
An interesting addition to A & W restaurant's vintage look are the roller skating waitresses. We didn't see them when we dropped in, but different internet sites still mention them.
American Graffiti is remembered here in photos from the movie, although most of it was filmed in Petaluma, California.
Mallard's offers good food for average prices. The restaurant is decorated with ducks, from etched glass to decoys. The food was good, we had a good time.
Favorite Dish: My grandmother would freak if she saw Mallard's version of minestrone soup. They make it cream based, almost like a tomato soup. But it's superb. Definetly recommend this interpretation of the classic.

Papapavlo's Mediterranean Bistro & Wine Bar
1320 Standiford Avenue #2 (@ Tully Rd)
Modesto, CA 95350
Dimly lit (not glaringly bright). The decor is interesting, and the layout of the restaurant is so unusual--it's like a cluster of smaller areas, so there really aren't more than a few tables in within eyesight of each other. If it's not too crowded, the staff let you choose where you sit, and you may end up with one of these little 'areas' to yourself. Very intimate.
Favorite Dish: Flautas!!
