Trader Joe's began in 1958 as a chain of convenience stores in the Los Angeles area. With their nautical décor, they have expanded to over 200 stores, and plan to build more. I would certainly not list shopping on the top of my to do list, but I love Trader Joes. A chain of grocery stores, which stocks imported and gourmet foods as well as some basic food and drink items, are one of the few places that I enjoy just browsing around in. I mean I actually have fun shopping in them! The people working in the store are always friendly and helpful, and they get to taste the food items, so they can tell you about them, plus all the stores we have been in cook up new products for their customers to sample. There are so many items I would love to try, and if you are concerned about genetically modified foods, all of the products from Trader Joe's private label come from non-genetically modified ingredients. Whenever we get to a town that has a Trader Joes, we both always want to shop there for some of our food items, and we always find something new to try. And, not only do they have great food and beverage products, but they also have very reasonable prices! The Trader Joe brand items we have tried have all been very good, and many are quite unique. I would love to have a Trader Joes near me, but sadly there are no Trader Joes in Wyoming. Cody is too small for a Trader Joes, but how about Billings, Montana? Come on Trader Joes, build one in Billings, please? Then we would only have to drive around 100 miles to shop at Trader Joes.

Businesses occasionally give discounts to military members. To recognize these businesses, and to assist any military in the area, I am listing them here as I find them:

McDonalds (Del Monte): 10% discount for military in uniform.

London Bridge Pub (Commercial Wharf): Happy hour prices on draft beers & well drinks and 10% off food.

Monterey Bay Aquarium (Cannery Row): I think $5 off adult tickets...tickets must be purchased at one of the local military bases though they might give you the discount at the ticket window.

Sports Center Bicycles (Seaside): 10% off all purchases.

Randy's Fishing Trips and Whale Watching (Fishermans Wharf): 10% off all trips.

Monterey Parking Division (Tyler St): For $10 a year get a permit that gives you the first 2 hours free at the city's four main parking garages (Waterfront, Customs House West, Cannery Row, and Cannery Row Lot 7).

Big Sur International Marathon (Big Sur to Carmel): Military discount available, they just don't advertise how much!

Santa Cruz/Monterey Bay KOA: 20% off (through 31 Dec 2006).

Adventure Center Skydiving (Hollister): $10 off a tandem jump.

Wayside Garage (1901 Del Monte Blvd, Seaside): 10% off auto repairs.

Seattle Scuba Schools (Monterey): 15% off PADI dive training.

Bulldog British Pub (Lighthouse): $1 off draft beers during Monday Night Football.

Lou Lou's Griddle in the Middle (Commercial Wharf): 10% of total bill for military members.

Ghirardelli Chocolates (Cannery Row) - 10% off

Dos Amigos (Forest Ave, Pacific Grove) - 10% off

Experience exquisite dining and shopping at The Lodge at Pebble Beach and the Inn at Spanish Bay . Here you can fulfill your shopping desires by choosing from the ultimate in golf and tennis gear, jewelry, women's designer fashions, art, gift items, and more.

Just walking along the flower festooned shopping area and browsing through the shops is a pleasant way to spend a few hours. While browsing or shopping don't miss an opportunity to dine at one of the fabulous restaurants at The Lodge or The Inn. The restaurants of Pebble Beach offer elegant French or Italian cuisine, a casual meal and even something in between.

The Ansel Adams Gallery: Explore the Wonderful Photographs of Ansel Adams

  • You will find this shop in the Cannery Row area of Monterey. It was open 10:00 to 8:00 daily when we were there. Most people in the United States who are interested in photography know about Ansel Adams. He lived from 1902 - 1984 and was the foremost landscape photographer in the United States. He is known throughout many countries of the world for his outstanding black and white photographs, so even if you are not from the U.S. you have seen his work. His wonderful photographs of the American outdoors have helped to shape conservation opinions in the U.S. He is still known as one of our greatest photographers of all time. In 1980 President Jimmy Carter awarded Adams our highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The citation for this medal read: At one with the power of the American landscape, and renowned for the patient skill and timeless beauty of his work, photographer Ansel Adams has been visionary in his efforts to preserve this country's wild and scenic areas both on film and on Earth. Drawn to the beauty of nature's monuments, he is regarded by environmentalists as a monument himself, and by photographers as a national institution. It is through his foresight and fortitude that so much of America has been saved for future Americans. One of his great loves was of Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada mountains, and you be able to see some of these outstanding photographs of towering cliffs, and tall waterfalls. In this gallery you may purchase prints of his photograph and books.

    Bay Books: Literally Heaven
  • By YksiOrbi on June 8, 2007

  • Bay Books is considered an institution in Monterey. It has served countless numbers of language students from local schools, such as MPC and DLI. Besides an excellent language section, it also has a large fiction section. To help buyers, Bay Books personnel use tabs to denote their favorites, noteworthy/special interest books, and books/novels personally autographed by their authors. Also, Bay Books has a cafe. If you got the time, a not-to-be-missed Monterey experience is to sit outside in front of Bay Books and bask in the sun while reading a book and sipping a drink -a heavenly experience!

Books, Books, Books, especially language books and autographed novels. Also, they will be happy to special order books that aren't normally available in the US. They ordered a novel for me that was solely published for the UK market.
Also, check out their t-shirts that have different facial expressions with foreign language captions below each face. They are available in different languages.

  • This shop along with the adjacent Monterey Bay Silver Co. are a small step above the usual tourist shops on the wharf. Morning Star Pearls has a sizeable selection of pearls and other semprecious stones. Worth a look just for a break from the postcards and shells offered at other shops.

Purchaseed an Amber necklace charm here to match some earing from another trip. $20

Quock Mui Tea Room and Boutique: Need a gift to bring home but not something tacky

  • Its a tea room and boutique, but its not like your grandmothers tea room its hip and theres about 80 different types of tea, and to my surprise they even sold different types of Mates! this place has body fragrance, candles, tea pots loose leaf tea, purses, beautiful jewelry, vegan cookies, and home decor. and they make everything by the cup made to order! Talk about customer service!

Tea Forte, loose leaf teas and matching tea pot. makes the perfect gift. or whats really cute that i do is i buy some loose leaf tea, get these "perfect cup of tea" spoons and in a cute little tea ball(they have them in different shapes) and give those for gifts! plus they have the most amazing eco- friendly cards. Everything i need in one place!

cup of tea is $2.75 loose varies from about $6-15. i usually leave paying about $25-50 depending on how elaborate i go

Little Treasures in Used Book and Music Stores

I've always beena fan of used book stores (you never know what you'll find) and Monterey has a few nice ones. There are also a a selection of used record stores throughout Monterey if that's more your interest. These are great places to get lost and I've found that the staff always seem to be happy to help you find something unique.

    Some of my favorites:
Book Buyers 600 Lighthouse Ave. ph: 831-375-4208 Hours: 11-7pm Daily. Prices here are reasonable and the staff seems to have a good handle on what is currently on the shelves (and what they are currently missing).

Book Haven 559 Tyler Street ph. 831-333-0383 Hours: 10-6pm Daily. A bit pricier than most used book stores I'm familiar with, but the selection is often rarer books. If you're looking for something that is out of print, this is a good place to start.

Cannery Row Old Book Company 471 Wave Street (in the Cannery Row Antique Mall) ph: 831- 656-9264 Hours: Mon through Fri 10-5:30pm, Sat 10-6 pm, Sun 10-5pm. Prices vary, selection is small but the staff is helpful if you're looking for something specific. Specializes in California, books of local interest and local authors/illustrators.

There are others I haven't yet explored:
The Book End 245 Pearl St.
Old Monterey Book Co. ‎ 136 Bonifacio Pl.

Everyone always talks about the rare moment when they find that priceless book hidden deep in a dark rare book store (and yes, these moments do occur). But I prefer to look for books that my local Borders isn't carrying, pretty hardcover books and books that otherwise just "look" interesting to me. Since used book stores tend to be less expensive (for non-rare/old books), you can stock a great library with your personal favorites for a fraction of what you'll spend at Barnes and Nobel (not that I don't spend a lot of money, there, too ;) ).

Enjoy...get lost in the used shops. These are great places to spend rainy Saturday afternoons.

$3-$3,000...depends on what you're looking for.
