The huge park offers many different hiking trails for you to discover. You can just walk there for a day or hike from camp ground to camp ground.
If you do backpacking there you will have to register at the parks headquarter. This is important as it is not just dry and hot, but the park is also home of mountain lion and rattle snake. So for your own safety you should talk to the staff at the headquarter.
What you will experience is a great nature, where with just a little luck you will have encounters with different animals. Beside the above mentioned ones, there are two other types of snakes, turkeys, coyotes, turtels, vultures and more. Check out my traveloges where you can find pictures of some of them.
For information on trails you can ask at the headquarter. They will give you ideas based on what you ask for.

There is a pretty good Bookshop called Booksmart on Monterey Hwy (the main drag) at Second on the Northwest corner of the intersection. It's got a little snackbar with Ice cream in it, so you won't be sad, and the selection is quite good, especially if you have kids. On the other side of Monterey, on the corner is a good coffee and Espresso bar...more

The area is mountain lions territory. Do not hike alone and take care of kids, if you have some with you. Having seen the grass I guess it is hard to realize them in time. The park suggests not to run away nor to bend, nor to show your back. Be loud and try to appear larger as you are. Thats why it is an advantage to be more than one person. We...more
There are snakes in the area, including the rattle snake, which is the only snake with poison here. So take care, as they from time to time cross the paths. We saw two snakes, but none was a rattle snake. The day we have been there, they caught one on the camp site.I took the picture from CalPhotos! Let me know if it is a problem!more
You will encounter lots of ticks, which are nasty as they try to climb on you. My colleagues found three of them each moving on their body (I was lucky and stayed clean) and we saw many waiting on grass to be picked up. Luckily they are much bigger than in Europe and more easily recognized. Anyway, it takes days until you stop checking all the...more
Didn't want to post it as warning as I assume you will not do it even without reading this tip:Don't feed coyotes. The day before we did our hiking there were problems with a coyote, coming to the camp ground. It expected food, cause somebody gave somthing to it. So don't do it, it does not help the animal, but causes problems!more
One of the big annual events in Morgan Hill is the Mushroom Mardi Gras. While not as grand at the Gilroy Garlic festival, you might get to see such talent as Eddie Money.Oh yeah, so past his prime.Good food, nice people and Don Larsen of the Dodgers (only no hitter in World Series) lives in town so got his autographe one year.Small town...more
My mother used to ride in the parade every year. Lots of small town charm, especially when they would wheel out the oldest person in town (104 ot 108) at the time.Always felt like the most rural, down home city although just 5 minutes from San Jose.Cool festival at this time of year.more
