    A Sterling location in Calistoga

by travelgourmet Updated Nov 16, 2014

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The hill comes alive with the sound of music and the sparking white bell tower commands the top of the Greekinspired architecture. You have arrived at Sterling Vineyards. Just the drive from the tree lined entrance road to the parking area lets you know that something special and unique awaits. There is a Disneyland feel to the main entrance gate. First, you purchase your admission which is $30.00 (worth the gondola ride alone) includind tastings and then go through the gate to an aerial tram loading zone. Yes, a tram ride up the hill to the winery. Wow. The view is awesome and you eagerly look forward to the top to start the tour. Hey, it already began on the tram.

Once off the tram, you walk a few steps up to the outside entrance and voila! you are offered your first tasting with a white wine, a Pinot Gris. The self-guided tour is at your own pace and easily marked to lead the way. Walking above the filling barrels station and resting barrels of wine gave you a view that few wineries can give. Workers down below doing their thing while you watch from above. The aroma of wine filled the air. So, the next stop is outside on the patio. What a view and also another wine station. This is getting to be fun. A lovely Viognier to sip while looking out over the northern end of the Napa Valley. I believe I saw the Castello di Amorosa across the valley on the opposite hill. Impressive.9

A quick look up at the bell tower, now so much closer, and back inside to continue the self guided tour. Rounding the way to another outside location that lets you peer out to the separation and pressing machinery and the six steps it takes to make wine. I have a travelogue on the process I call "From the Grapes come the Wine". Now back inside and into the winery's main rotunda room off the tasting bar room. Here was another taste of Sterling, a lovely Syrah, while we gazed at antiquities and a copy of an Oscar. Three tastings down and a great experience of learning about a winery. Now for the final two tastings at the tasting rooms tables. Sitting down and reflecting on a memorable hour and a half of exploring the Sterling Vineyard Winery with a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon and a Malvasia Bianca. A lovely ending to a lovely must do experience.

WHAT A FUN WAY TO START A WINERY TOUR THE STERLING WINERY POND VIEW FROM THE TRAM GREEK INSPIRED BELL TOWER SO MUCH WINE, SO LITTLE TIME ROLL OUT THE BARREL RIGHT TO MY CAR TRUNK

PART FOUR of my sterling Vineyards Tips with MORE PICTURES

Sterling Vinyards is one of the more popular vinyards in the Napa Valley Area, particularly in Calistoga. The Main Draw of this huge wine estate is that they offer the only Aerial Tram service to the Napa Valley Area to and from their estate in the hills. They have the mandatory wine tours like in any big wineries but the wine tour and tasting here is self guided and you can do your own pace and there are assorted wine tasting spots along the estate where you can taste their different wines like Reserve Merlot or Chardonnay or Reisling or Sauvignon Blanc and more. The ambiance in their estate is greek inspired and the architecture of their Estate is Greek Mykonos Island style with a large patio/veranda outside, perfect for picture taking and al fresco wine tasting or Dining.

    About Our Winery
Perched 300 feet above the town of Calistoga, Sterling Vineyards offers panoramic views of Napa Valley. An aerial tram carries visitors up the hill to the winery, whose architecture was modeled after that of the Greek island of Mykonos, where Sterling founder Peter Newton once lived. The brilliant white stucco stands out dramatically against the rugged Mayacamas and Vaca mountain ranges that flank each side of Napa Valley. Mount Saint Helena makes a lovely distant backdrop. The winery’s towers house eight bells from London’s Church of St. Dunstans-in-the-East, originally founded in the 10th century. The church was destroyed by fire in 1666, rebuilt, then destroyed again during the bombing of WWII. Each time, new bells were recast from the old metal to give them superior tonal quality. The rich tolling of these ancient bells sounds down through the valley on the quarter hour. Walkways, balconies, and motion-sensitive DVD screens allow guests to take a self-guided tour of Sterling Vineyards’ winemaking facilities. Beautiful outdoor terraces and elegant tasting rooms provide the perfect environment to enjoy exceptional wines while taking in the view. The extraordinary Mediterranean-style architecture, unique aerial tramway, stunning location, historic bells, and attention to visitors make Sterling Vineyards a top destination in Napa Valley.

Tastings & Tours: Adults $15US, Under 21 accompanied by an Adult $10US (not allowed to taste) Children under 3 free.

The tasting fee includes the aerial tram up to the vineyard. Sterling is located at the top of a hill in Calistoga, hence the need to take the tram up to the vineyard. The wine is just okay, but the views of Napa Valley from up here are worth the trip!
