Being on the northern edge of Los Angeles county means we don't have to drive too far to have some fabulous rides near home. Some of my favorite rides can be found on this site: http://westrides.com/rides/ride_results.asp. You can search by city or state in the available western states.

Robert E. Callahan for his Mission Village in Culver City built this in 1927 for a tourist attraction and movie set. Like the Ramono Chapel the village had to be moved in 1963 due to freeway construction for the Santa Monica section. The building actually houses the desks, a blackboard, and a lectern dating back to 1858. It was donated by Mrs. Marion Callahan and moved to the Heritage Junction for everyone to enjoy.

It was the centerpiece from 1926-1962 of Robert E. Callahan's Mission Village in Culver City who assembled it from bits and pieces of 200 old churches designed by composer Carrie Jacobs Bond of "The End of a Perfect Day." The sign reads: Non Sectarian Ramona Chapel, Its two seat pew, rich alter, 48 cup brass candelabra, and pipe organ music make it an inspiring shrine for mediation." Absolute Silence Please.
It was here where Gary Cooper was inducted into the Sioux Nation, used in a John Wayne movie and visited by Wyatt Earp, Will Rogers, and Joan Crawford. It had to be moved in 1963 from Mission Village because of the freeway construction of the Santa Monica section. Eventually donated by Mrs. Callahan and moved to Heritage Junction in 1987.

This cottage of Swiss-Germanic Style was one of many built by the Southern California Edison Company for employees in 1919 when the Newhall substation opened. It was moved west of Saugus in 1925 when the "new" substation was completed. Assistant Edison Patrolman Raymond Starbard who was credited as being the first to spread the alarm of the 1928 St. Francis Dam disaster lived here. The cottage was donated and moved to Heritage Junction in 1989 for everyone to enjoy again.

The adobe was originally 45 x 60 feet, and made of clay dug from a layer deep in a hand-dug well. Colonel Thomas Finley Mitchell, a veteran of the Mexican-American War had combined the adobe and the old miner's shack that he moved to Soledad and Sand Canyons in 1860 where he lived and headquartered his 160-acre ranch. He married Martha Catherine Taylor in 1865, who began the Sulphur Springs School in 1872, and taught in the kitchen of the adobe. Sadly the adobe fell into ruin in 1919, but was salvaged by the Colonel's son-in-law, Walter Murphy and used as a home for the ranch foreman, guest house, apiary, tack room and it fell into ruin again by 1986. What was left, was rebuilt and moved to the park in 1989.

This house was part of the grand Rancho San Francisco that had been established by Franciscan padres of the 18th century. The Del Valle family were granted the 48,612 acres 35 years later. William Wolfskill, a vintner/orchard owner bought it 1857. Mr. Thomas R. Bard bought it 1865 who may have built the first structure with basement. Henry M. Newhall bought the place at a Sheriff's sale in 1875 and made the improvements. Gregory, Mr. Newhall's son lived here until his death in 1903, then his a younger brother, Walter until 1906. The house then became the ranch foreman's residence. It eventually was donated and now being enjoyed at Heritage Juntion.

Built as a Good Templars Hall in1890 by Henry Clay Needham who founded the Newhall Water. In 1893 Mr. Ed Pardee oil man, constable, and an owner of the livery stable, moved in it. It was even used in Tom Mix films 1917. Pearle Russell, Mr. Pardee's daughter sold it to the Pacific Telephone Co. in 1946, which became the Newhall telephone exchange. The Boys Club used the building from 1969-77 and it was used in the 80's by the Chamber of Commerce. Now she sits at the Heritage Junction to be enjoyed again.

Built on September 1, 1887 to accomodate passengers who were traveling along the Southern Pacific Railroad line. Passengers needed places to stop to rest and eat. A Tolefree's Saugus Eating House was established at one end of the depot for a short time, until Martin and Richard Wood in 1898, bought the business and changed it to, The Saugus Cafe. Eventually in 1905 additional storage was needed for freight so the cafe had to moved across the street where it stands today.
Cowboys were common by shooting up the place and even this part of the track was robbed. President Benjamin Harrison even stopped here in April, 1891, as with Theodore Roosevelt and Governor Henry T. Gage in 1903. Sadly like so many wonderful stations, the last passenger train that stopped April, 1971 and the last freight train in 1979. Although closed, it was not lost. It was moved on June 24, 1980 to its new spot at William S. Hart Park.

This has to be one of nicest Veteran's Memorial Plaza I have ever seen. I was totally blown away in how much care was taken to present such a beautiful area. The fountain are not overwhelming, and treckle enough water to muffle the local sounds from the traffic nearby. Each of the plaques that surround the fountains each describe the various wars we have had to defend. The Little Boy Drummer sculpture is beautiful done. Across the lawn there are standing proud the United States and California flags also being flanked by flags from each of the five branches of the military. There is also a lovely Victorian pergolas on each side of the flags. A brick walkway surrounds the ellipse along with hundreds of engraved bricks honoring individuals who served in the military. I recommend anyone who has family who are veterans to stop by and enjoy the plaza.
