    Piedmont Avenue

by machomikemd Written Nov 23, 2013

Piedmont Avenue lies along montclair neighborhood of Oakland and abuts Piedmont City and this district is the heart of luxe shopping, dining and nightlife in Oakland, and host a good number of fine dining restaurants (of which some has earned the coveted michelin stars, like the Commis Restaurant), bars, lounges, shopping retailers, the iconic fenton's creamery (from the movie "up") and a lot more. The area is one of the relatively safe spots in Oakland.

    according to wikipedia:

The Piedmont Avenue neighborhood is a district in North Oakland, California. It is named for Piedmont Avenue, the main commercial street of the district. The neighborhood is bounded by Broadway on the west, Oakland Avenue and City of Piedmont (a separate municipality, an enclave within Oakland) on the East, the Mountain View Cemetery on the north, and the MacArthur Freeway (Interstate 580) on the south.

Historically, the Piedmont Avenue shopping area has provided retail shopping for the upscale city of Piedmont, California, as well as Oakland's own affluent Montclair neighborhood, which along with the city's wealthy Rockridge district, converge on the north and east borders of the Piedmont Avenue neighborhood. Many trendy and highly rated restaurants –– including the renowned Baywolf, Dopo, and the Michelin-starred Commis –– and an eclectic array of boutique retailers line the street.

There are several landmarks in the area. The center of the Piedmont Avenue commercial strip is a Julia Morgan-designed 1916 red brick building, originally built as the Fred C. Turner Stores, which is at the corner of 40th St. and Piedmont Avenue. It now houses several gourmet food merchants. Next door is the location of the original Longs Drugs store, which is now home to a tapas bar.

    Churches in the hills

Side by side in the hills above downtown Oakland you will find the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Ascension and the Mormon Oakland Temple. These temples share a stunning view over the bay and the citties of Oakland and San Francisco.

Oakland's first Greek Orthodox church was constructed in 1921, and it moved to the current location in 1960. The massive Mormon Temple was completed in 1964 and is lit up like a giant lighthouse at night, making it visible from throughout the Bay Area.

    Port of Oakland

Oakland has the busiest seaport in nothern California. Harbor tours are available, from Jack London Square. You can also use the ferry boats (see my transportation tips) or take a ride on the USS Potomac. On these trips, you can observe giant ocean-going container ships, the huge cranes used to load and unload them, and the other vessels coming and going.

    Old Oakland

by lacole Updated Oct 22, 2006

Most people brush off Oakland when visiting the Bay Area. Believe it or not there is a lot to do and see in Oakland especially if you're into shopping. You'll have a blast in Downtown Oakland; with it's plazas, courtyards, retail stores, boutiques, restaurants and cafes. And not to mention, it's a lot cheaper than San Francisco.

This North Oakland neighborhood has tons of great restaurants, cafes, and coffee shops along it's main drag (College Avenue). Also many small shops, although food is the big thing here. The residential side streets have lots of arts-and-crafts style houses, and are generally very pleasant and charming.

Lots of places and things to see in the square. Just walk around and take in all the sights, sounds, smells, and food.

Jack London Square is a good place to just hang and be a tourist.
