    101 Cafe: Oceanside's Oldest Cafe!

by Yaqui Updated Oct 25, 2010

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

In 1928 the Ekegren family opened a twenty seat diner along US Highway 101 and named it the "101 Cafe." It is the small dining room where the counters are now. The north dining room was added in the mid 1930's. The Greyhound bus made a stop in front until the 1940s when a station was built downtown. The 101 Highway was the main road to bring people from the Los Angeles area to San Diego. In 1942 the Navy Department purchased Rancho Santa margarita y Los Flores for use as a Marine Corps Base for out WWII effort. Things quickly changed as thousands of workmen moved into Oceanside to construct what would happen become the largest Marine Corps Base in the world. The was now called the 101 Cafe and Drive In and Trailer Park. The trailers use to house the employees and families. Sadly a bypass happened and this section was renamed the business route 101 in 1953. Yet, the drive throughs were popular then, but by the 1960s drive-in's were not as popular. The cafe found life as a coffee shop and called Jimmy's, Randy's, and now called 101 Cafe!

~ CASH ONLY ~ ATM at the counter:)

    Open 0630am till Midnight Everyday

Favorite Dish: The place is really small and the isle where the booths are narrow. Although, the food was good it took 45 minutes to get it and sadly their was only one waitress. She was doing the best she could to keep up, but she was really pleasant under pressure. We will not go back, but you have to try at least one time.

Felix's BBQ With Soul: BBQ with Soul

by BLewJay Updated Oct 1, 2009

With the large population of miltary personnel (and family) in the area, you would think that there would be a decent BBQ place to enjoy. Well they are few and far between, but I think we've found a place that will make everyone happy. Felix's BBQ with Soul has been open for about a year now and people are slowly finding out how friendly this place is and how delicious the food happens to be.

Favorite Dish: We met up with a friend of ours to catch up on old times and what a great evening. LJ ordered the Side Platter (which included Macaroni & Cheese, Black Eyed Peas, Sweet Potato Fries & Cole Slaw) while I had The Rib Tips Platter (fall off the bone rib tips, macaroni & cheese and corn bread). I've also had the BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich with fries...umm, umm good!!!

Favorite Dish: I new restaurant which just opened up in Oceanside. We stopped in to check it out and what a great find. The decor is truly Southeast Asian and the food is "to-die-for." LJ ordered Bún Cha' Giò Bo` Nu'o'ng (rice vermicelli with egg rolls & bbq beef) while I had Bún Tôm Thit Nu’o’ng (rice vermicelli with bbq pork & shrimp).

  • 101 Cafe: Great food on Highway 101

by Harborman Written Jul 10, 2008

Great find on the Historic 101. Came into this diner late one night and found that they served breakfast all day, until midnight. Enjoyed the service as much as the food. They told me that the Cafe opened in 1928, that must mean they have been pleasing diners since then. I will be back when I cruise down the 101 again.

Favorite Dish: ABC Omelette, smoked bacon, fresh avocado and cheddar cheese with their freshly made salsa made a great meal. I enjoyed the homefries and tortiollas also, did I say I liked the service.

Cafe de Thai: A perfect combination

by BLewJay Updated Nov 12, 2007

A concept that didn't exist in Oceanside until now...Thai and sushi under the same roof. The decor is a combination of traditional, modern and oriental, teak furniture, waterfalls, lotus flowers and of course the food. But all that wouldn't work except for the outstanding attention to detail and customer service provided by the owner Chai and his staff.

Favorite Dish: The appetizers we've tried include an order of Crispy Crab Rolls (crab meat and minced shrimps with a touch of garlic and coriander, wrapped in an egg roll and served with lemongrass plum sauce), the Rainbow Sushi Roll (California roll topped with tuna, yellowtail, salmon and shrimp) and the Chicken Curry Cups (Crispy mini cups filled with minced chicken, potatoes, peas, carrots, and onion with yellow curry). For dinner, LJ has selected the Mango Chicken Shrimp Entrée (large shrimp and chicken tenderlion cooked in fresh mango and sweet chili garlic sauce with a side of steamed rice) and Ginger Perfect Chicken (Pan-fried marinated chicken tender with ginger and vegetables in brown sauce) while I've had the Shrimp Cashew Entrée (large shrimps stir-fried with cashew nuts and mixed vegetables with a side of steamed rice) and Prik-King Entrée.

Hana Japanese Restaurant: A Japanese Bistro

by BLewJay Written Feb 19, 2006

It's interesting the people you meet while commuting on the train. This past week, I was talking to a fellow passenger and we ended up discussing food. He had mentioned some things that he liked and asked if I has tried sushi...well I had but it wasn't on the top of my list. He said that we need to try Hana...great location, nice prices and most of all, delicious food...plus they offer a sushi "all you can eat" menu. So, I did just that and have to admit that he was right about everything.

Favorite Dish: The sushi bar (where the "all you can eat" dining takes place) has a wide range of choices for you to select (8 different appetizers, 23 types of Nigiri sushi, 12 types of cut rolled sushi and 6 types of hand rolled sushi). For the appetizer we choose Chicken Teriyaki and Vegetable Tempura. Of the Nigiri Sushi, we chose Amaebi (sweet shrimp), Eel, Octopus, Scallop, Shrimp and Tuna. For the Cut Rolls, we chose the Shrimp Tempura and of the Hand Rolls, we chose the Snow Crab and Shrimp Tempura.

Love Boat Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar: This is something good

by BLewJay Updated Feb 13, 2006

On the recommendation of our neighbors, we went to the Love Boat to enjoy sushi. It's a relatively new establishment in the area, but already has a loyal following...we went on a Monday evening and the place was packed. Great service, lively atmosphere, delicious food and great prices for what you are served...definitely a place to visit when you come to Oceanside.

Favorite Dish: We decided to order an appetizer - the Crunch Scallop Roll and an entr?e - the 18 pc. Sushi Combo (tuna, red snapper, salmon, albacore, shrimp, California Roll and miso soup).

Mary's Family Restaurant: Where friends meet to eat

by BLewJay Updated Jan 25, 2006

If you are looking for down home cooking, the best food in town, daily lunch specials as well as delicious homemade pies, then you have to try this place. We went on the recommendation of one of our neighbors (for breakfast) and wow was the food delicious. Not a fancy place, so no need to wear your fancy clothes, just bring a big appetite.

Favorite Dish: LJ had Mary's Power Breakfast (three farm fresh eggs, two strips of crispy bacon, two sausage links, country potatoes and two buttermilk pancakes) while I had The Croissant Breakfast (ham, two eggs, swiss cheese and country potatoes) along with coffee.

  • McDonalds on the beach: The only drink at the beach

by sabsi Updated Jun 14, 2005

Unfortunately there aren't any places directly at the beach to get a drink (or then we didn't find them. There's a Diner at the end of the pier but we only wanted a quick drink).

Underneath the pier there's a little McDonalds booth though where you can get yourself a drink. I normally don't make McD tips on here - but as there's no other opportunity we found I thought this might be helpful

Favorite Dish: A supersized Diet Coke.

L & L Hawaiian BBQ: The Aloha spirit in Oceanside

by BLewJay Updated Jun 2, 2005

On our way to Hawaii (O'ahu), we had seen an advertisement for L & L Hawaiian BBQ. Great food, lots of choices and the price was right (inexpensive). Well, we didn't get the opportunity to visit the restaurant while there, but lo and behold, I found out that they have outlets in the San Diego area (Oceanside).

So I decided to try it out and what a great choice that was. The menu is extensive and covers everything trom beef to seafood and there was nothing over $10.00. So if you visit the city and are looking for great food at a decent price, why not try L & L Hawaiian BBQ.

Favorite Dish: I had the Chicken Katsu Lunch Plate (multiple pieces of boneless chicken coated with special seasoning then deep fried and served with L&L's chicken katsu sauce, macaroni salad and rice) while LJ selected the Fried Mahi Mahi Lunch Plate (a favorite of the islands, three fish fillets breaded then cooked golden brown and served with rice and macaroni salad).

Chili's Grill & Bar: Try something new

by spartan Updated Apr 15, 2005

Chili’s is the perfect place to come in and break out them from the routine. Since 1975 Chili's has been serving up a good time, every time, with exciting and flavorful menu items that always surprise and delight. Quality food served in a lively atmosphere is what they deliver every day of the year.

Favorite Dish: I had the Citrus Fire Chicken and Shrimp entree (a spicy combo of Margarita Grilled Chicken and garlic and lime grilled shrimp) served with rice, fresh veggies and pico de gallo.

Ocean Thai Cuisine: "The true taste of Thailand"

by BLewJay Written Feb 25, 2005

If you are looking for authentic Thai food made from scratch everyday, then this it the place to go. It's a hidden gem in Oceanside with a dedicated clientele that keeps coming back. Service is first-rate with attention to detail and the food is beyond compare...and you get a lot of it for a nice price

Favorite Dish: We started off with an appetizer called the Sampler Basket (vegetable egg rolls, mini rolls of ground pork/glass noodles/bamboo shoots, fried tofu and baton shrimp). For dinner, LJ had a dish called Green Curry (shrimp, squash, bell pepper and bamboo shoots cooked in coconut milk with jasmine rice) while I had Phad Thai (pan-fried noodles with pork, egg, bean sprouts, carrots and bak choi in a delicately flavored sauce covered with crushed peanuts).
