Driving is the easiest way to get to Old Town San Diego State Historical Park, but once you get there you may have to circle the various parking lots numerous times before finding an open space. Especially during holidays and the summer this popular visitors site is very crowded. There are several parking lots surrounding the Park on the east and west sides and they are free of charge. Street parking may have meters, which means, you'll have to return every two hours or so and feed them with more coins.
San Diego Trolley--Blue line--will take you to the Old Town Trolley Station which is just a couple of blocks from Old Town San Diego State Historical Park. This station is also a hub for many of the buses in the San Diego area. So, if your hotel is not near the SD Ttrolley line, you can take a bus either to the nearest Trolley station or directly to the Old Town Trolley Station.
The Old Town Trolley Tours bus makes a stop in Old Town San Diego State Historical Park. It is an expensive form of transportation, but not so expensive as taking a taxi. The convenience of being guided to the most interesting spots in and around San Diego might be worth the cost to some people.

This is not the San Diego Trolley, some people get the two mixed up. This is a "tour" bus and the SD Trolley is a train that is part of the mass transit system in San Diego County. There is an Old Town San Diego Trolley station a few blocks away.

Walking is the only way to roam through this life sized museum. The streets are closed to any type of vehicle--except wheelchairs. However, the streets are short and the walk is broken up by many buildings to explore. The walk is easy, even for me and my cane.

One thing when visiting Old Town San Diego, be sure to take your time and be patient. There is parking along Juan Street and Congress Street. Also, Caltrans has a parking lot on Taylor, but only weekends. There is more parking near the Transit Center on Pacific Highway too.
