Temescal Gateway Park is the most popular hiking spot in the Santa Monica Mountains probably because of the location. It is off the famous Sunset Blvd and less than a mile from the beach. It is a 4.4 mile loop hike with a small waterfall at the bridge. It gives you a good view of the coastline. And if you want to enjoy nature and stargaze it is the perfect spot. The Pacific Palisades is home to a good number of movie stars and they like to hike too. Although you will be shocked by how small and not that "beautiful" they are. It is located less than 5 miles from Santa Monica, Venice Beach and Malibu.
Remember to say hello to the Ranger.

A wonderful way to spend a few hours for very little cost. An inside look as to what was J. Paul Getty's passion. You'll see Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities arranged by themes including Gods and Goddesses, Dionysos and the Theater, and Stories of the Trojan War. Roman-inspired architecture and gardens.
Admission to the Getty Villa is FREE. An advance, timed ticket is required. Each Villa ticket allows you to bring up to three children ages 15 and under with you in one car. Please note that this does not apply to tickets for events, such as lectures and performances. Parking is $8.
Also, check out the Getty Museum, under my Los Angeles Page.

When Will Rogers died, his estate went to the state. Rogers was a big horse fan, and the Will Rogers Polo Club still plays on his estate. But I thought the coolest thing about the park was the trails leading off into the densely forested hills. You should check those out.

See the beach. The water is warm in the summer months for swimming. Surfers surf year-round using wet-suits.

It's right on the beach. Fantastic ocean views. Get there early for dinner and watch the sunsets from one of the outdoor balcony tables.

You could sail to Pacific Palisades using a catamaran similar to these. However, it's probably faster and easier to drive. Parking the car could be a problem during summer.

Crossing PCH on foot can be dangerous because car drivers tend to drive fast and the glare of the sun can momentarily blind them. So either use the walkway shown here or cross at a designated crosswalk.
I've seen the police give tickets for jay-walking.

Fondest memory: A Califonria Highway Patrol (CHP) giving an escort to a film crew that was filming a motorcycle rider along Pacific Coast Highway (PCH).
