Joshua Tree National Park, Palm Springs
Great drive in National Park. Moves from the Colorado desert to the Mojave Desert. The landscape and rock formations are incredible. The Joshua Tree sure won't keep the sun off but there are alot of them.
When you get to the Palm Springs area you are surrounded by lush golf courses and 1000s of swimming pools and have very little exposure to the actual desert that surrounds the area.
One of the better ways to experience the desert is with Adventure Hummer Tours that offers a daily trip to the desert in a fleet of open air yellow Hummers. They offer both morning and Sunset tours that take you to spectacular canyons where you see a real Oasis. Their most popular trip is their Joshua Tree Adventure Tours. One this trip they climb into Joshua Tree National Park by way of an old goldmine trail.
This is a great way to see parts of the desert that you can never see on your own. The guides are very knowledgable. The best part of the trip is riding in one of these Hummers. They are actual military Hummers and can really tackle getting into these places where your cell phones will thankfully flicker off far away from the noise and confusion of the city.
Once you return from your adventure, you can emmerse yourself in a great pool and really feel like you did not miss seeing the REAL desert.
What a beautiful place to visit. The rock formations are unbelievable and make sure you get to Keys View. We climbed up the opposite side of the lookout point and what great view. There was not a sound to be heard either. My only regret was not having more time to spend there. There were many trails we didn't see and camping there would be great.
Look out for Wile E. Coyote too. He stands in the road looking for handouts from the cars driving by so please be careful and do not drive too fast.
