No permit is required since your already a guest of the Aerial Tramway. They are several trails here you can enjoy. We did the first trail and I did that in flip flops, don’t recommend it, but I survived:) The first is Long Valley Discovery Trail, just follow the nature trail post around a ¾ mile (1.2 km) loop. This easy level trail provides an excellent introduction to the Parks plants and animals. No feeding the animals. Desert View Trail: A 1.5 Mile (2 km) trail leads to a number of scenic overlooks and forest views. Short climbs, moderately strenuous. PERMIT REQUIRED (FREE) Wilderness Trails: A number of excellent opportunities for more challenging day kikes or camping are beyond Long Valley. Please check in at the Ranger Station for a Wilderness Permit, and to inquire about current conditions. SO SIGN IN PLEASE, this is so they know when and who for YOUR safety. 760-325-1449 Recorded information: 760-325-1391 Aerial Tramway 9:45 p.m. weekdays, 8 a.m weekends and holidays. Cars depart at least every half hour. Last car. Leave a Comment Address: Tramway Road, Palm SpringsPhone: 951-659-2607Directions: From Riverside, take Interstate 10 East to Hwy 243 South to the park. We made it!!!! 11miles and 8500' later! by bruingirl If you like challenging hikes, Palm Springs has the most challenging day hike I have EVER done! Jutting out next to the city of Palm Springs are the San Jacinto Mountains. If you have ever taken the Palm Springs tram, it takes you to the top of the mountains to an area called Long Valley, at an elevation of 8500'. This was our final destination. This hike took us about 7.5hrs with a lunch break and a couple of smaller snack breaks. It was sooooo beautiful! Not only was the view of the entire valley just amazing, but the topography of the mountain itself was just fascinating! We started off in desert terrain - dusty and littered with a variety of insects, spiders, lizards, and cacti. After several hrs, we found ourselves in chaparral terrain with manzanita trees, brushes alive with variegated flowers, and red rocks. Then, we found ourselves amongst tall pine trees, granite stones, bluebirds, and snow! It was truly a wonderful experience! Please see my travelogue for more details. Also, please, if you are going to tackle this, have about 100oz. of water per person and plenty of energizing foods or bars. Please see my travelogue for more pictures and information on this hike! :) Directions: Start the trailhead at the museum.

by american_tourister A real nature hike that is mixed with a cultural and historical tour. The guides are all employees of the reservation and they take great pains to explain the history and folklore of the canyon. by MooreTravels Hwy 74 loop...up the mountains to about 6000 ft. It was 92 degrees when we left Palm Springs and about 70 degrees at the top. You can full circle back to Hwy 10 (which is the way most people drive into Palm Springs from the North) Great little site seeing trip with beautiful mountain views and a huge variety of landscape changes. From rugged desert to forest land. They have some great hiking trails for the adventuresome. Leave a Comment Directions: Take Palm Canyon South to Hwy 74 which is in Palm Desert. Follow signs to Idyllwild and then just stay on that road.

San Jacinto by goingsolo The San Jacinto mountains border Palm Springs. Mount San Jacinto is one of the most accessible, although its a long way to the summit, whichever way you choose. We decided to ride the tram to 8,500 feet and the hike the remaining portion. For more information, feel free to browse my Mount San Jacinto page. Leave a Comment

by Tenzin Visit Joshua Tree National Park and enjoy the spectacular rock formations weathered over eons by the harsh climate. There's even one that looks chillingly like a skull serving as a good reminder on the fragility of human life in such an inhospitable environment. Bring plenty of water say a pint per person. Drive in a group or join a tour. Stay on the path. Or better still, stay in the shade. You'[ll be surprised how much cooler it is under the shade. In fact we saw whole families having a picnic right under one! Leave a Comment Address: 20 minutes drive from Palm Springs
