A few miles from Palm Springs, The River is the typical upscale shopping and entertainment destination: huge movie theater with IMAX screen, Barnes and Noble or Borders, Cheesecake Factory, P.F. Chang's, Yard House, smattering of local restaurants, smattering of fast food, an ice cream joint, and a few perpetually closed clothing boutiques. Outdoor walking areas, outdoor live entertainment, numerous fountains, and the inexplicable sight of gangs of unsupervised preteens slamming into each other and into various edifices. (Who drops these kids off? Aren't they supposed to be in bed at some point? Boy, when I was a kid....) Roaming security guards, preposterously sprawling parking lots, and inadequate sidewalks leading out to those selfsame parking lots. You know the type of place this is. You could probably design one yourself, at 1/4 the price that the real estate developers are charging. So, what makes The River different? In a word: lights. Or, more accurately, the lack thereof. Unlike typical shopping and dining venues, The River relies heavily on oblique light, submerged lights, and light from stores and the tops of roofs. The whole place has a darker, sultrier edge because the night is so palpable. (Also, being Palm Springs, the heat really is all but touchable!) Besides the dimmer lighting, The River also has a much more family friendly, late night crowd. Swarms of people were out, lounging around, even though most places were closed. It makes for a nice sense of camaraderie. The River is fun and pretty, though much tamer in its water use than its name would imply. (There are fountains and a semi-meandering channel of water that feeds into pond. However, it doesn't come even close to recreating a tumbling river, much less a lush waterscape.) By the way, those valet guys really run to get your car from across the vast expanse of parking. And it's always very hot outside. So, to assist in their various college funds, consider leaving a nice tip. This excursion was one of the highlights of our trip! At the entrance gate we received a trail guide with a trail map and a lot of hiking suggestions. Also warnings such as " Know your limitations", "carry as much water as you can" and "Beware of rattlesnakes". Enough to scare off a couple of European tourists who didn't feel the heat of the sun since more than a year (way of speaking). So, contrary to what we are used to, we decided to do what most tourists in this area do: walk a mile or so along the river in the oasis. What a surprise! Such a beautiful place! Waterfalls, giant rocks, palms, sun, shade, flowers... Paradise on earth! Starting at the Trading Post, we walked to the West Fork Falls and hiked a small part of the Murray Canyon Trail without seeing any snakes. BUT, we were lucky to see another typical inhabitant of the area: a Granite Spiney Lizard, at least 8 inches tall (see 4th photo). The narrow entrance to Palm Canyon by Robachu1 Indian Canyon offers its visitors a truly unique opportunity to visit the desert but also view enormous palm trees thriving there. There are many hiking trails throughout the canyon area but the heat can be oppressive so be sure you have enough water. by MooreTravels Great drive in National Park. Moves from the Colorado desert to the Mojave Desert. The landscape and rock formations are incredible. The Joshua Tree sure won't keep the sun off but there are alot of them. Leave a Comment Directions: Joshua Tree National Park about 50 minutes NE of Palm Springs....take water and walking shoes and allow at least a day. However, your ticket is good for 5 days.

ATVing is like jetskiing without the water. The fun is in having a powerful motor beneath you and racing across the desert sands. Leave a Comment Address: Outside Palm Springs city limitsDirections: Off Highway 10
