The land for the Moffett Field...

Favorite thing: The land for the Moffett Field was commissioned by the United States Government in 1933, and was originally to serve as a base for the navy dirigible the U.S.S. Macon. The Nasa-Ames Research Centre researches hyper-velocity flight, and it has a gigantic wind tunnel which is used for research. This is a photo of my husband and son in front of a scaled down version of the Shuttle.

Favorite thing: There is a visitors centre, with quite a few exhibits and information on NASA and their research. There is also a tour available which takes about 2 hours of the actual research centre, but this has to be booked in advance and therefore we did not go on this. This photo again of my husband and son is with Nasa research aircraft.

Favorite thing: In the 1930's there were two dirigibles here, USS Macon (as I mentioned) and USS Akron. These dirigibles are filled with helium. In 1933 just prior to the official opening of the hangar USS Akron crashed killing 73 people including Rear Admiral Muffett. In 1935 USS Akron crashed into the Pacific Ocean near Big Sur. Nasa-Ames Visitors Centre is open Monday-Friday 8am - 4.30pm. Telephone No. 604-6497. Entry is free. There is also a souvenir shop. To make an advanced booking of the tour the Telephone No. is 604-6274. I am not really interested in this kind of thing so I did not find it particularly interesting. However, if you like anything to do with aeronautics and space you will enjoy your visit here.

Favorite thing: Check out downtown. It's not San Francisco, but it gets busier and more interesting every time I come home. Also, take a look at Stanford campus and consider a stop at the Baylands.

Fondest memory: Having grown up in Palo Alto, my favorite memories are from my childhood, before Palo Alto was synonomous with Silicon Valley and traffic on Hwy 101 was so crazy! One of my best memories is of rollerskating all over Stanford Campus with my friends.
