West Marinites are known for being fiercely protective of their environment. They have zero tolerance for litter or dumping. Dumping in West Marin is like bringing drugs into some countries. Seriously. This "monument" was created from trash collected from the creek alongside a road. The messages read "All this junk out of the creek", "Water and oil don't mix" and "Not a pretty picture." It would be very wise to dump elsewhere, like in a designated trash bin. Or pack it out.
Even though the coastline in Point Reyes is absolutely beautiful, it's generally a rugged beauty. There are few beaches where it's actually safe to swim. However, if you happen to find Drakes Beach, you can safely go for a dip in the ocean (though the water's chilly!).
Point Reyes Station looks a quiet town, but this doesnt`mean that important issues are disregardes ;)
