We hired a boat and crew, the Nehemiah, for a largish party (about 30 people). Great way to get a nice sail on the bay. From Richmond's Marina.

    Grand Opening of
    Richmond's Canalwalk
Opened in the Spring of 1999, the canal walk is the first stage of the Richmond Riverfront 32-acre project. Enjoy a leisurely walk along the restored Kanawha and Haxall canals, while viewing exhibits about the rich history of Richmond's waterfront. Or take a guided boat tour on the restored Kanawha Canal, orginially designed by George Washington. Boats are also available for group rentals and self-guided tours of the Haxall Canal. From 4th to 16th streets on the riverfront. For more information on the canalwalk and the riverfront expansion contact Richmond Riverfront Development Corp. at 804/648-6549. To rent a boat or schedule a guide boat tour dial 804/ 788-9989.

Richmond Warnings and Dangers

Richmond is a poor, extremely violent ghetto on the north end of the East Bay. You should not go here for any reason, and, for the life of me, I can't think of any reason you would - other than to take the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge to Marin County. If you are driving 580 near the bridge and are in Richmond and you need to stop to get gas or go to the bathroom or get a snack - WAIT! Do it somewhere safe.

    You have been warned.

Please note that you'll see some very pretty pictures on this page, with some tips on some interesting things to do. Unfortunately, as all you southerners will be able to tell immediately, these are descriptions of Richmond, VIRGINIA - not Richmond, CALIFORNIA!

Normally I would not be so nitpicky - but I would hate to see anyone wind up here thinking it was somewhere nice. If you get off the BART looking for the Canal Walk, it may be YOU ending up in a canal!
